Florissant is a town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-Munich-Springfield metropolitan area. Florissant was founded in 1836 by fur traders from the Russian Empire and named for General Floridian () who helped lead an army against General James K. Polk's Expedition to Kansas in 1846. The first post office in Florissant was established on October 15, 1836, under the name "Gardiner." The current post office building was built in 1909 and is one of three original structures still standing in Florissant. In 1865, a branch line of the Union Pacific Railroad was opened through Florissant and reached St Charles City two years later. This allowed goods to be transported directly from Springfield to St Louis without having to go through Chicago or Memphis. In 1870, when this railroad became part of the Illinois Central Railroad system, Florissant residents voted to incorporate as a city; it did so on December 8th that year. During World War II (1939–1945), local farmers produced food for troops stationed overseas via production lines set up near their homes. A large number of these plants were destroyed during Allied bombing raids over Europe during 1944–1945; however, many fragments of these plants remain extant today as Heritage Park artifacts located adjacent to Interstate 70 east of town where they once operated
