Florissant is a town in Kit Carson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,821 at the 2010 census. Florissant is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The first settler in Florissant was James Ahern who arrived in 1837 and named it after his father's birthplace, Fergusloe on the Firth of Forth in Scotland. Ahern had been born in 1802 near Glasgow and emigrated to America with his parents in 1826. They settled on a farm about two miles west of present-day Florissant. Ahern acquired land for settlers around what is now Florissant Creek and built a cabin about 1840 which he called "Fergusloe". He served as justice of the peace from 1843 to 1850 and also held several other offices including postmaster from 1840 to 1845; school trustee from1848 to 1850; treasurer from 1849 to 1850; and councillor from February 2, 1840 until his death on October 3, 1850. In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited Florissand while touring southwestern Missouri during his 1861–1865 Civil War campaign against slavery: Grant observed that "the people hereabouts are very intelligent ... I have never seen more enterprising or industrious than they are". Grant later said: "This place has given me many interesting ideas for my future campaigns" . In 1870, Governor John Pemberton appointed George Washington Life Guards detachment #7 to provide protection for agriculturalists growing corn on their property along Sunnyside creek north of present-day Florissant village limits east of White Flint Road: When Confederate forces occupied St Louis on April 6, 1865 (prior to the Union’s victory at Gettysburg), local farmers organized themselves into militias under Captain Samuel French's command and drove out the Confederate occupiers before they could burn or damage their crops or homes. French led a unit into town Proper where he met Captain George Armstrong Custer who expressed interest in buying some corn owned by one Mr Kappenheimer but found that all available hands were already harvesting it . Armstrong then offered Custer five hundred pounds worth of ears for each man he recruited plus transportation back home across country . Kappenheimer fully endorsed this plan when he learned about it later that day FromCaptain French's letter home dated April 5th 1865 shows that much effort went into organizing these measures by citizens prior to hostilities commencing

Florissant was founded in 1836 by Captain George Armstrong, who named it for the Floridian tree that he had seen growing in Tampa, Florida. The town was first established on the east bank of the Missouri River, about a mile below where Florissant now stands. In 1840, Major General James K. Polk won his famous victory at Zingibert's Farm over Mexico in what is considered to be the first major U.S. military victory since independence from Great Britain. As a result of this event and other successes at Battle of Gettysburg and elsewhere during the Mexican-American War, Florissant became one of the most important U.S. towns in central Missouri. During World War II, Florissant played an important role as a supply depot for Army troops stationed in nearby St Louis County and north central Illinois. The population of Florissant peaked around 1950 with more than 10,000 people living there; however, following integration and economic decline throughout much of Missouri during the 1960s and 1970s, its population has steadily declined since then. Today only a few remains of buildings from when Florissant was such an important community remain: the post office (1937), radio station (1945), cotton gin (1893), blacksmith shop (1912), grocery store (1930) – all are now gone but still remembered by locals as places where people could go for food or goods they needed or wanted without having to worry about prices or availability anywhere else nearby.
