The city was founded in 1835 by Nathaniel Wirths and named for Florissant, France. In 1854 it became a town when it annexed the neighboring town of Washingtonville. In 1907 the towns of Florissant and Washingtonville were combined to form one new city with a population of 24,527. The City of Florissant became an independent municipality on November 1, 2009 after winning a referendum over whether or not to become an official part of the St. Louis metropolitan area through annexation by St. Louis County According to the 2010 US Census, 64% of residents are White (of any race), 28% are Black or African American, 2% are Native American/Alaskan Native, 3% are Asian Pacific Islander, 0% are from other races, and 9% report being Hispanic or Latino

Florissant, a town in St. Louis County, Missouri, was founded in 1839 by Dr. George Rogers Clark and his wife, Rebecca. The original plat of the town was filed on November 3, 1839. It was located on the river banks east of Florissant Arsenal where the city now stands. The first settler to arrive in Florissant was Elijah Morse who arrived in 1840 from Maryland with his family. He built a cabin near what is now Main Street and First Avenue. In 1847 John Sibley arrived from Illinois with his family and began to farm there. In 1848 came Lewis Hite who also started farming there. In 1850 Drury Gentry arrived from Kentucky with his family and began to operate a blacksmith shop at what is now Fourth Street and Washington Avenue. In 1861 James Kapp bought land along the riverbanks east of Florissant Arsenal for $1,000 which he used to build a gristmillrace known as "The Kapp Mill." It operated until 1865 when it burned down due to fire caused by an exploding cannonball during the American Civil War Battle of Fort Donelson inside the arsenal complex where Florissant Arsenal sat today (now part of Ferguson). In 1893 Harry Crain built a large frame house on Second Street which served as both home and office for many years until it burned down in 1912. The building that remains today serves as Florissontown Hall Museum which contains relics from this time period including old tools, toolsheds,belts etc.. Reverend J T Thomas opened up store #2 at Third Street & Laurel Grove Road in 1893 serving farmers throughout St Louis County until 1978 when it closed because of competition from Walmart Stores across town which became increasingly larger each year reducing choice for small businesses especially those within walking distance of their stores.. The last business open at Third Street & Laurel Grove Road before Walmart took over was Stone's Hardware which closed in late 1999 after more than 60 years in business.. Mr Stephen Lofgren purchased Stone's Hardware approximately two years later after its closure and reopened it as Lofgren's Grocery Store starting February 1st 2003 making it one of only three remaining grocery stores left active within five miles radius of downtown St Louis! This provide[ed] much needed retail foot traffic into downtown during off-peak hours providing opportunities for local merchants to sell their goods directly to customers rather than through big box stores!
