Festus is a town in Johnson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Johnson County. The first European to visit what is now Festus was George Washington on his way to St. Louis in 1796. He named the site "Festival" after an annual celebration held there in honor of Saint Festus, who had been martyred thereabouts. The first permanent settler in the area were two brothers, John and James Dixon, who arrived about 1810 and built a log cabin on theranch called Elk Branch which still stands today. In 1824, Pierre Dorion founded a post office at present-day Festus and named it for himself, French for "West Point." In 1827 Doc Ricketts settled here with his family from Illinois and named it after him – Rickettsburg (later Rock Springs). A store opened here in 1828 by Solomon Eaton under the name of Eastern Mercantile Company store #1. In 1830 Isaac Davenport erected a frame building on Main Street which served as Post Office until 1840 when it burned down leaving only its foundation standing today. By 1840, over 100 settlers had located here including David Rice Sr., father of David Rice Jr., one of America's most successful farmers; Absalom Sprague; Elijah Hicks; Amos Mosely; Myron Bowers; Hiram Page; JnoMoses Englishman(White) and others who would contribute materially to Telluride Township development including Robert Morrison (founder of Morrison’s Ford), Wm Hargrave ( founder of Hargrave’s Store), Chauncey Alger (founder of Alger’s Store), Ebenezer Atchison (founder of Atchison Amusement Park), Lorenzo Niles (founder of Niles Drugstore) and GeoGrigory Bateson( founder/president/CEO/chief executive officer - Tribune Media Co.). George Washington's birthday wascelebrated annually at Festival by conducting an annual picnic there involving military veterans from both sides Of The Potomac along with their families on July 14th adjacent to present day White Sands Missile Range.. After each year's event President Washington would return home for dinner at Mount Vernon before departing again for another year! In 1865Festus became separate from Johnson County when Trumbull County was organized.... On February 17th 1861 Union forces staged an unauthorized raid intoJohnson County during the American Civil War targeting Confederate General Sterling Price's farm house near this spot known as 'Price Farm'. One militiaman killed four people inside while nine more were taken prisoners including three children resulting in global notoriety known as Bloody Saturday.......After yearslong debate between pro-Unionists and anti-Confederate partisans local residents voted in favorof secession on November 3rd 1861 becomingthe first community westofthe Mississippi River to do so.........In 1870Festus became partof Dodge City when that city merged with Kansas City.....

Festus, Missouri is a city in Franklin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,611 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Franklin County. The town was named for Festus Augustus Stroud, an American statesman and executive during the height of the Jacksonian Era in 1828-1829. Until 1821, when it was part of Randolph County, Festus lay within Caldwell County on the east side of the Arkansas River. In that year, Randolph County was organized from parts of Caldwell and Park counties and Festus became a part of it as well. In 1824, officials decided to move the county seat from Farmersville to what is now Festus because there were already two cities in Franklin County: Independence and Carthage. At first, residents objected to this decision because they thought that Carthage would become more prosperous than their small town which they considered their home. However, after some time they came to appreciate how much easier life could be if they had a central government with which to share resources equally among all its citizens. The original courthouse located on Main Street still stands today and is used as a museum occasionally; it has been listed on the National Register of Historic Places since 1966. The building also served as home to local newspapers until 2002 when they moved across I-70 into new facilities in Springfield Township just north of downtown Festus.
In 1839, Festus was the site of a Battle between United States and Mexican forces.
