The range became operational soon after and has since been known as "The Ayer Range." Founded in 1836 as a small community on the banks of the Arkansas River near present-day Springfield, Festus grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to its location on a major wagon route between Cairo, Illinois and St. Louis. By 1860, Festus had over 1,000 residents and was one of three towns in Phelps County that were chartered by act of Congress as places of refuge for fugitive slaves escaping to north America fromArkansas slave states. The first recorded settler in Festus was Isaac Greenough who arrived in 1836. Greenough founded what would become the town on August 6th of that year when his party set out from Pella (now East Pittsburg), Illinois for Fort Worth, Texas with livestock and goods he had acquired along the way. He named his new settlement after his brother-in-law Augustus Herndon who had served as Governor of Arkansas during the mid 1800s. Festus was founded in 1836 by John and Nancy Festus. The first Post Office at Festus was established in 1837. In 1861, the town (and county) were named for General James H. Fenton, who had fought in the American Civil War. The town grew rapidly during the late 1800s and early 1900s due to its location on theomegaly of Railroad Street and its population of around 3,000 people by 1905. After World War I, Festus experienced a decline in population due to the war and changes in technology. However, it regained some popularity after Elvis Presley moved to nearby Graceland in 1957. In 1994, Festus passed through a time of growth with the arrival of a new shopping center known as "The Festival Place."
