At that time this area consisted of only scattered villages and farms which were quickly united under one roof when Reverend Smith organized them into a town or village government known as "the Township." The first permanent settler inFestus was Isaac Beardsley who arrived about 1840 from Ohio and built a log cabin near present day Main Street/US 61 junction where he still resides today. Mr. Beardsley played an important role in early festival life by officiating at its earliest meetings and playing an instrumental role in organizing local volunteers for various community activities such as wagon drives and grain sales which proved to be very popular among locals because they could get involved without breaking any rules set forth by Reverend Smith or his board of directors!
