Festus is a small town in Polk County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,828 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The town was named for George Washington's father-in-law, James Festus. George Washington himself never visited the town, but his grandson JamesFestus did so in 1819 and donated land to the town on which it now stands. Festival Park is one of two parks in Festus and is home to the local high school football team as well as several tennis courts and a playground. The other park in Festus is White Sands Park which includes a baseball diamond and small pond with observation deck overlooking Interstate 59A north of town. The first settlers in what would become Festus arrived around 1800 from Kentucky and were followed by others during the early years of this region's history. By 1822, there were over 100 people living in what would become Festival Township including many farmers, mechanics, traders, merchants and slaves who had been brought over from Africa or more recently Spanish America. In 1823 the township was organized into three parts; east side (later renamed Northside), south side (later renamed Westside) and central part (now known as Southtown). In 1827 a post office was opened at Festus with John Wirthsman as its first manager. A store/gentlemen's club called "Pioneer Meeting House" soon followed with meetings being held there until about 1830 when it moved to nearby Florissant where it remained until purchased by county officials in 1865 for use as an courthouse Extension Building - becoming known locally as "Old Courthouse". From 1865 until late 1870 when it burned down while under construction due to neglect by county officials - business operations centered around daily ferry service between Florissant Landing on both sides of I-59A heading out towards Pollock’s Point where boats could be unloaded onto landing pads located just offshore - restoring transportation options after low water levels caused closures during flooding seasons became common again thanks to improved levees system built following World War II! Festus, Missouri is a town in Buchanan County, Missouri, United States. The population was 2,811 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of Buchanan County. Festival Park was built in 1907 on the site of a slave market. The park served as a public square for the town and its adjacent villages until it was closed down in 1979 by then-Mayor Lenora Hinton. It reopened in 1984 as part of downtown Festus's revitalization. The park features a large central fountain that has been moved from its original location to within feet of the city hall building since 2007. In 1821, US Route 66 passed through Festus and crossed over into Buchanan County; this made it possible for settlers to travel between Jackson and St Joseph without having to go through Kansas City or Prairie Village. In 1873,Festus had incorporation as an unincorporated community with four stores and fifteen residents; however, by 1875 most of the town had either been destroyed by fire or abandoned due to lack of economic opportunity. In 1906, Mayor Lenora Hinton proposed that Festival Park be renamed "Lenora Hinton Park". However, because there were already several parks in town named after people other than Lenora Hinton (e.g., "Queen's Park" and "King's Park"), she instead decided to rename all but one of the existing parks - "Festival Park". Because only two out of seventeen properties were actually zoned for agricultural use (and because only 1/3 of Festus' total land area was used for commercial purposes), much of Festival Park remains undeveloped today; however, one side entrance still leads into what used to beLenora Hinton Park's courtyard before it became part of downtownfestuses revitalization project which began in 2007
