Roland Garros and his father, Emile, founded the Garros Rifle and Pistol Manufacturing Company in Festus, Missouri in 1892. The company manufactured rifles, shotguns and pistol sights for sporting purposes. In 1916, Garros sold the company to Winchester Repeating Arms Corporation. Winchester continued production of rifle scopes until 1978 when it was acquired by Leupold &Barre Incorporated. Festus, Missouri is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,811 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was founded in 1821 by General James Fenton and others as a trading post on the upper Platte River. The name " Festus" comes from French for "happy." Fenton had been impressed with the natural beauty of what he called "the beautiful country around Lexington," Kentucky, and decided to come here in search of it. He named his settlement after his friend and patron Saint Festus (Clementius Felix), who had died in 226 AD. Fenton's successor as governor of Jackson County, John Pemberton, madeFestus an important center of trade and culture. In 1834, Pemberton built the first store in Festus; it became a substantial commercial enterprise until its closure during World War II. In 1858, when Missouri became a state, Festus took on an even more important role as both a county seat and cultural center for rural Jackson County residents looking to escape their larger cities. A college was established here in 1861 (later renamed University of Missouri-Kansas City) by Governor Andrew Johnson; within two years, however, it closed due to financial difficulties. A new courthouse was erected soon afterward and remains one of downtown Festus' most enduring landmarks today. In 1865–66 local schoolchildren helped build one of America's first municipally run health clinics; that same year also saw the opening of the world's first grocery store outside metropolitan Chicago - Frantz & Co., which remain an influential fixture in downtown since then). Until recently much industry activity took place along Interstate 170 - now known as State Route 506 - adjacent to downtown where heavy manufacturing has taken place over recent decades including numerous plants operated by Monsanto Company until that company shut down its entire Kansas City operations south of I-70 some time ago due to environmental concerns about lead exposure thereabouts... At first, Festus residents protested but soon started to enjoy all the benefits that came with incorporation: better schools, streets named after famous people ( such as George Washington), more businesses boomtown-style centres (like movie theatres), and even their own water system (which still functioned until 1978). The city experienced another growth spurt in the 1940s when World War II brought large numbers of soldiers home from overseas; many jobs were available for those who could learn new skills or start their own businesses. This growth continued into the postwar years as various industries hit hard times and festusedians found themselves able to get ahead without leaving their homes or giving up their lifestyle changes.
