Pepper spray is a weapon that can be used in self-defense. It is effective at preventing assailants from attacking, and can also be used to subdue suspects. Pepper spray comes in both chemical and electronic forms, with the most common form being pepper spray electronic devices or units (PYUs). These devices are worn on the body like a watch or necklace and release an irritant gas when activated. The device has three areas that are susceptible to attack: the eyes, nose, and mouth. If these areas are hit by pepper spray while someone is attacking them, it may stop the attack and protect them from further injury.

On May 8, 1885, Festus, Missouri was the first town in the United States to apply pepper spray as a form of self-defense. The town's ordinance authorized use of pepper spray "for the purpose of preventing any person from committing any assault or robbery."

Festus, Missouri is located in the Ozarks of southern Missouri. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census and 2,022 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The town was founded in 1855 by a group of farmers led by John Purdy. It became a boomtown due to its location on the Mississippi River and its access to timber, water supplies, and transportation. In 1907, Festus became an incorporated municipality with a population of 1,500. Families that settled here included those from England who came over as indentured servants in 1820; Welsh immigrants who arrived in 1834; Germans who arrived around 1870; Irish immigrants who came after 1916; and African Americans brought over as sharecroppers during Reconstruction. Most of Festus's residents are descended from these various groups (although there are also some descendants of Native Americans). The town has been home to many businesses and organizations related to agriculture: H&R Block ran a grocery store here for more than sixty years until it closed in 1998; Bemis Machine Company manufactured tractors here for generations before moving production to Mexico City; and Big Bend Farms produces cotton, corn, soybeans, hay, oats, pumpkins—and other vegetables—in addition to livestock products such as cows and pigs. A number of Festus landmarks still remain standing from when the town was first established: Purdy Chapel (named for one of its founders), which still stands today as a small private chapel used by locals for services; Wagon Wheel Drive (now Old Stagecoach Road), which served as the town's main artery until it was widened and divided into two lanes several years ago; Purdy House (the original courthouse building) now houses local government offices while preservationists work on restoring it};and Well House No. 3 (a water well found near Main Street).

Pepper spray has a long and diverse history, dating back to the ancient Egyptians. Pepper spray was first invented in 1875 by an American doctor, Dr. John D. Rockefeller, as a way of subduing Native Americans during conflicts in the Dakota Territory. The earliest pepper spray cans were made out of animal skin, with burning powder inside to create an intense pain sensation. The early designs proved difficult to use and caused serious injury or death if used incorrectly. pepper spray development continued through World War II when it was used extensively by the military as part of their firepower against enemy combatants; however, its indiscriminate use led to many injuries and fatalities among civilian populations nearby. After the war, pepper Spray became widely known as a counter-terrorism tool used domestically and abroad; however, its misuse remains a problem today as it is often used without proper training or safety guidelines.

In the early 1800s, pepper spray was used as a form of self-defense in the United States. Pepper spray is still used today as a means of deterrence and protection from potential attackers.
