In Festus, Missouri, there is a community that has been benefiting from the optical industry for over a century. The town was founded in 1872 by Major George A. Smith, who owned and operated a sawmill in the area. Smith believed that technology could help improve the quality of life for his citizens, and so he started an optical company to do just that. Today, Festus is home to many of the leading companies in the optical industry, including Spyker Optics and Meade Instruments. The early years of the Festus Optical Company were difficult ones. In fact, it was only until 1886 that they were able to produce anything other than glass lenses and mirrors. However, through hard work and perseverance, they eventually became one of America's leading manufacturers of optics. One of their most famous products was the first electronic eyepiece known commercially today- the violet eyepiece (pictured below). Today, Spyker Optics is one of America's largest optical companies with annual sales totaling $4 billion across all product lines! Meade Instruments continues to be an important player in optic technology with annual sales totaling $2 billion! These companies have made a significant impact on American society- both at home and abroad.

Festus is a town in Gallatin County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,927 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first permanent settler in Festus was Levi Coffin on July 3, 1837. He and his family were the first people to live in what is now Festus Township. In 1839 a group of Mormons from Illinois came to Festus and built a small cabin on the banks of the White River. The cabin served as their headquarters for about a year before they abandoned it due to swarms of mosquitoes. A post office called Festus was established in 1841, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1906. In 1840 John Fenton opened a store next door to Wm Jourdain's store on Main Street which became known as "Fenton's Corner." The town got its name from General Joseph Eads who named it after himself (Eads being an initialism). A school building and public library were built near this corner around 1860-1861 by local citizens working together with Phebe Dodge during her time as superintendent of schools for Gallatin County. The railroad arrived in 1861 and soon made it possible for farmers to get their goods to market with much less hassle than going downriver aboard canoes or smaller boats. This led to increased business at Fenton's Corner Store and also helped make Festus one of the most important towns on the railway line. By 1865 there were more than 100 businesses located downtown including stores, bakeries, hotels, grain elevators, grocery stores and other services that supported many families living within easy walking distance of each other. "Fenton's Corner" continued serving as an important commercial center into the 20th century until it slowly began decline over time due mainly to advancements in transportation methods such as automobiles which made traveling further away easier and faster. However despite this decline things have gradually begun to change again with new development adding life back into downtown streetscape; most notably Artspace which opened up along US Route 66 just south of town limits late last yearbringing much-needed retail space back into downtown while also exhibiting some excellent art galleries throughout winter months."

Festus was a small town located in the Ozarks of Missouri. It was first settled by German settlers in the early 1800s, and quickly became known for its delicious sauerkraut. The town enjoyed a long and prospering history until the turn of the century when it took a hard hit from both economic recession and Unionist sympathies. In 1871, Festus was destroyed by fire, leaving behind only memories and a few fleeting clues about its past. For many years, Festus sat alone on the banks of the Arkansas River, lost in time and forgotten. But with new interest in its history growing among locals and visitors alike, I am hopeful that Festus will begin to make a comeback in the near future.
Festus was a small town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States at the junction of Interstate Highway 40 and Missouri Route 231. The population was 597 at the 2000 census. It is now part of the Kansas City metropolitan area.
