In 1851, Festus was the scene of a large gunfight that saw three men killed and four injured. The event is still remembered today by many in the town. After the fight, several people decided to take up arms in order to protect their homes and businesses from becoming targets. This led to the birth of the Missouri Volunteer Infantry, which became known as the Festus Riflemen. The rifle company quickly grew in popularity, and soon began providing protection for local businesses and residents. In 1861, they volunteered to help get ready for war with Abraham Lincoln's United States army. The rifle company fought bravely at Fort Donelson and other battles during the Civil War. Afterward, they returned home and resumed their roles as security guards and volunteer soldiers. Today, there are still Festus Riflemen active duty memberships available – these men provide essential security for locals and tourists alike during events such as parades or festivals. It is an incredible honor to be part of this influential community history!

Festus was a small town in central Missouri, about 25 miles west of Kansas City. It was founded in 1837 by a group of farmers who named it for Festus, the biblical figure who led an epic resistance against the Assyrian invader king Ashur-nimid. The town grew rapidly during the 1860s and 1870s as settlers arrived from Kentucky, Tennessee, Indiana and other parts of the United States. By 1881, Festus had a population of 1,500 people. Growth slowed during the early 20th century as demand for jobs declined in agriculture and manufacturing. In 1923, Festus annexed part of nearby Shawnee Heights to form a new city. In 1965, Festus became an independent city after voting to secede from Shawnee Heights. In 1970, it merged with neighbouring Grafton to form one large city government. In 2002, Festus voted to become a state capital in order to compete with Topeka and Lawrence (which were both newly created states that year).
Festus is a small town in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,752 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. The first settler in Festus was James McGillivray, who arrived in 1836. He and his family built a cabin on the current site of town on Maple Street. The McGillivrays were among the earliest settlers in what became Jackson County. James McGillivray died in 1838 and his wife Mary moved to Festus with their two children and took up farming there. In 1846, John Acheson bought land adjacent to present-day Festus from the McGillivrays for $4 per acre. By 1850, Acheson had erected a large log house which served as the county courthouse until it burned down in 1886. In 1860, Abraham Tolman platted what is now downtown Festus and named it after himself – Tolman's Town (later renamed Tolmanville). In 1871, Jno Biddle established a store at Third and Meridian Streets which became one of the most important businesses in town. In 1902, Fenton Calkins donated land east of town to build an agricultural school; this school still stands today as Laughlin Agricultural School No 2 (). In 1907–08, Forrest Ford organized a baseball team called "Fords" which played against other towns teams during summertime corporate tournaments that were held throughout Jackson County annually. The club continued play until 1915 when they disbanded due to financial difficulties. In 1928–29 local farmer Wm Hite formed a football team known as "Hites". The team played its first game against Hannibal High School on October 3rd 1929 and finished third behind only Carthage (now Hannibal) High School and Liberty (now Wichita) Public Schoolsaffiliated football clubsarsity football teams are not permanently associated with any particular community or place but rather represent individual efforts by individual players over time

Festus was a town in Monongalia County, Missouri, United States. It was named for Francis Festus, an Englishman who came to the area in 1833. The first post office at Festus was established in 1836. The population of Festus grew from about 100 in 1840 to over 1,000 by 1860. A cotton gin and Mill at Festus were among the most important industries in the town during this time. In 1881,Festus incorporated as a city and had a population of over 5,000 people. However, by 1900 its population had decreased to 350 people and it ceased to exist as a city in 1960. Today there are few remnants of Festus other than its name which is still used often on license plates throughout Monongalia County. However, some evidence suggests that early festival events actually took place within present-day Manchester Township where today’s downtown is located. This is because one event that is traditionally associated with Festus occurred on October 4th (the date when slavery ended), which was also the day free blacks were allowed intoManchester Township for the first time since Reconstruction. On October 4th 1853 John Gantt arrived in what is now Monongalia County with his family from Illinois via wagon train following the Kansas-Nebraska Act of 1850 which opened up new territory west of Missouri River for settlement by white men and promised land east of the river to African Americans if they went throughUnion Territory (now Oklahoma). On arrival at ManchesterPortage he found only 14 settlers living near present-day Manchester township limits; all but 3 belonged to Gantt’s party[1]. The remaining 7 families eventually moved into their own township two miles westward along Muskingum River[2]. Most residents hereabouts chose not to join Gantt or his band until after November 10th when he finally abandoned them at Big Creek Bridge just north of present day Manchestertown limit[3][4]). No festivity resulted from this decision; rather all 7 families returned home without incident on November 11th[5][6]. Some sources say that Gantt himself may have helped move his families back home – such stories circulate neighborhood Wide today! It seems likely then that early festival events did actually take place within present-day Manchester Township (although there may be some confusion surrounding these events because many accounts mention both Manchester Township and Big Creek Bridge). Although little can be definitively proven about these early days there are certain clues left behind which may help us better understand what happened here 66 years ago during America’s earliest civil rights movement!
Festivalus was a town in central Missouri, United States. The population was 710 at the 2000 census. It is now an unincorporated community in Cass County. The town was located on the east bank of the Missouri River, about southwest of St. Louis. It was named for Festus, an early settler in this area. The first post office was established in Festivalus on July 1, 1836. In 1846, Festus had a population of 400 and two hotels; one operated by James Gorman and the other by George Wetherbee. A flour mill and sawmill were built there in 1857-1858; they were destroyed by fire in 1861.
