As time passed and more people moved into the area, they began to realize that there was a surplus of firearms available. In 1868, James Wills founded Wills Rifle Company which produced muzzleloading rifles for sale to farmers and militiamen. The company continued operations until it merged with another rifle company in 1899. At its peak, Wills Rifle Company produced over 100 cannons, pistols, revolvers, shotguns, fishing spears and other weaponry products. The proliferation of firearms led to some serious accidents involving these devices which often resulted in death or injury. One such accident took place when Amos White shot a bear with a shotgun while hunting near town limits on December 9th, 1872. White killed the animal and wounding several others before he was arrested by authorities F[eatherston] MO 667727

The Town Council decided to rename RAF Lakenheath "Festus Air Force Base" due to this history
