The first gun swivels were developed in Festus, Missouri in 1868. At the time, firearms were not commonly seen as a means of security and many people used them for target shooting. The gun swivels became popular because they allowed users to rotate the firearm so that it could be aimed at different targets from any angle.
Festus, Missouri is a small town in the Arkansas hills located about 25 miles northeast of Little Rock. The population was 1,052 at the 2000 census. There are two churches in Festus - First Baptist and Pentecostal. In addition to these religious organizations there is also a library, a post office, and several businesses. The first settlers in Festus were farmers who arrived in 1818. They raised livestock and grew corn, potatoes, wheat, and other crops. By 1860 there were six families living in Festus. The town was platted in 1868 by John Aiken who named it after his brother-in-lawFestus Robertson of Kentucky. In 1870 the town had three stores and seven residents. Two years later a school was built with $3 from local citizens and $5 from the state government. In 1874 an express wagon road was constructed from Fort Smith to Festus which increased trade between the two towns. In 1880 a mill been built which produced flour, meal, butter, hops, tobacco products and other items for local consumption as well as exporting to Arkansas for processing into hardware or other goods until 1907 when that mill closed down due to economic reasons (see below). The first church service held in Festus occurred on February 12th 1865 when Revs Jno Henson (a Methodist) and James Cleveland preached from Isaiah 61:1-2 about Reuben's work on the altar at Jerusalem before God's Judgment Day assembly of all people present including Gentiles who should be circumcised according to Moses' order because they were "the children of Canaan." Reverend Henson also preached on January 10th 1866 about how one day soon everyone would be saved through faith alone without works offerings so what benefit could any person possibly receive? On November 9th 1886 Mrs Sallie Meeks officiated at services attended by Mrs Lillie King (married to Wm Boren), their six children ages 3 through 11; Dr Harry Easley (married to Fannie Barnes); Mr Hardy Harper (married to Lena Harper); Geo Fenton ( Married To Sarah Jane Hardesty ); 30 some residents turned out for funerals of family members killed when train derailed near here on October 5th 1865 while traveling eastbound on Ulysses S Grant Road south of this community en routeto Pittsburg Landing north of this community having stopped at Poplar Bluff southeast of this community where they had gone prospecting for coal during the free hunt days following Lincoln's assassination; Mrs Nancie Goodloe(widow Of Saml Goodloe)and her five children aged 8 thru 15 who lived with their grand parents Raymond Goodloe(grand father)and his wife Anna Maria(née McIntosh)(sic) outside Carthage just west of Poplar Bluff since late October 1865 not long after this place came under Union occupation as part of Ford County.( Map showing locationironically today’s Route 66 running parallel nearby.)This place then became known as “Festa Monroe” after General Lafayette Monroe who served twice as GovernorofMissouri Territory during that time period.(See map attached .) Festus was a small town in central Missouri, circa 1836. It had a population of about 150 people when it was founded, and by 1860 it had shrunk to just 10 people. The town was named after Festus Priest, who lived in nearby Hannibal. The first settler in Festus was James Waddell, who arrived in 1836. He built a cabin on the eastern edge of town. By 1840, he and his family had moved to a more permanent home near the courthouse. In 1845, Waddell married Jane Burchill and they began to raise livestock. They also constructed a few buildings in the town proper. In 1851, John Auld settled at the intersection of Highways 36 and 41A. He soon erected a large frame addition to his farmhouse which served as the first store in Festus. A new school began operations in this building on September 1st, 1861; it would remain open until 1938 when it burned down (along with most other important structures in the community during that time). In 1865, Augustus Crouse established himself as an entrepreneur with a small gristmill located several miles northeast of Festus on Hwy 362B (later renamed I-470). This mill became one of the most famous businesses in central Missouri because its products were used extensively by local farmers and ranchers throughout the state during that period. During World War II, Camp Funston was located adjacent to Festus for military training purposes; however much of what is now downtown Festus originated as civilian housing following World War II.
Festus, MO was founded in 1836 by the brothers Elijah and Elisha Funk. The town began as a trading post on the river front, and it grew quickly into a small village. In 1855, Festus became the county seat of Harrison County. In 1907, Festus was renamed for General George S. Patton, commander of American forces in Europe during World War II.
