The first post office was established in 1839, and the first store was built in 1840. The first school was established in 1846. The community developed around a cotton gin operated by Jno Wainwright from 1868 to 1898. Wainwright donated land to the town on which he built his plantation house and other buildings including a library and mechanic shop. In 1902, Festus incorporated as a village with a population of about 100 people. In 1957, it became an unincorporated community again following passage of the Consolidation Act that merged several nearby towns into Springfield-St Louis Regional Airport District No. 1 (now known as Mid-Missouri International Airport). This act made it illegal for anyone under 21 years old to possess any machineguns or shotguns without a license from a federally licensed firearms dealer. There were also restrictions placed on magazine capacities to 15 rounds or less per article and rifles could only be possessed with one round of ammunition left in each chamber. After passage of this act, manyGun Manufacturers began producing handguns with increased magazine capacity such as Colt’s Model 1873 revolver having 25 rounds instead of 10 Rounds per issue back then (This is still true today). In 1896, bans on pistol caliber weapons were put into place through various Acts including the National Firearms Act Amendments 1892 which created registration requirements for all handgun buyers and sellers while also increasing tariffs on imported pistols making them much more expensive than domestically produced guns at that time. After passage of these Actsmany Gun manufacturers began producing revolvers with 30 rounds instead of 20 Rounds per issue-making it easier for law enforcement officers to find and confiscate weapons when needed rather than having to search through an entire magazine for just one round needed for their weapon

During World War I, many residents enlisted in military forces and some were drafted into service; however, most of Festus’ citizens supported neutrality during wartime. After the war ended, many residents decided to return home and rebuild their homes after experiencing economic downturns during the 1920s and 1930s. In 1948, Festus voters passed a charter amendment giving them full municipal autonomy; this event helped spur development within the community over ensuing years.
