The name Festus comes from the German word "Fest" meaning fair and "tust" meaning to speak. The first settler in Festus was John Faust who arrived in 1811. Faust built a cabin on what is now Fourth Street. In 1814, Frantz Bache moved from nearby White Sands to start a business called the Fayette Forge Works with his brother Conrad Bache and their father Johann Baptist Bache. On November 15, 1815, Frantz married Maria Anna Hagerty (1804-1885). They had five children: Friedrich Wilhelm Faust (1817-1900), Archibald Ernst Faust (1820-1903), Clara Augusta Faust (1822-1907), Emilie Auguste Faust (1824-1910) and Julia Friederike Faust (1827-1920). In 1826, Friedrich Wilhelm Faust took ownership of the Fayette Forge Works and added an oven to it which became known as the "Frendoso". In 1830, he founded one of the first grain elevators in Jackson County. That year also saw Fritz Platten become mayor of Festus after serving two terms as a justice of peace for Jackson County In 1836, three brothers – Franz Xaver Platten (1799-1868), Ferdinand Ludwig Platten (1800-8953) and Matthias Heinrich Platten (1800-|87)|| -- pooled their resources and started production of cigars at their parents’ factory called “Plattenschloss” near present day downtown Festus. This cigar manufacturing dynasty would continue until 1911 when all descendants died out except for one son who operates a cigar store today named “Fritz Platten & Sons” Incorporated in downtown Festus
Festus, Missouri was founded in 1836 by John C. Fremont and the town became a important center of the fur trade in the region. The town experienced some major growth during the early years of its existence, with many businesses opening up and people moving to Festus from other settlements in the area. The fur trade eventually faded out, however, and Festus slowly began to decline during the 1840s. By 1850, it had essentially disappeared from the map of Missouri. However, it continued to exist as a small community until 1865 when it was renamed after George Washington Carver.
