It is part of the Springfield-Springfield-Jersey City, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town formed from part of the village of Springdale and was named for General John A. Festus who fought in the American Civil War and later became governor of Missouri. Fiesta Park is a large open grassy area located in the center of town that hosts various events throughout the year including summer concerts by local bands and dances on Friday nights; carnival games on Saturday mornings; and an annual Christmas fair on December 6th. Festus' ZIP code is 63622. The first settler in Festus was Levi Strauss who came to this area around 1835 with his family from Weber County, Kansas. He built a log cabin on what is now Main Street and called it Straussville after himself and his father-in-law Jacob Strauss (1811-1872). In 1839 he married Emma Lavinia Kapp (1814-1900). They had six children: three daughters: Catharine (b 1840), Fannie (b 1842), Martha (b 1850) ; one son: Matthias J.(b 1852) .In 1840 they added another daughter Eliza Jane Kapp to their family when Catharine’s husband died suddenly while traveling east overland to take care of her sick mother back at home in Nauvoo Illinois Territory; the family moved into a house near where they still live today on First Street just off Market Road before returning home for good in 1841. The following year they erected a sawmill on current Main Street which continued operation until 1893 when it was destroyed by fire. festus post office opened March 14th 1865 as Josephine Post Office having been organized February 15th 1865 under Act No 754 Of 1862 known as “An act for erecting buildings for public use within this county” Also included were four stores located along Main Street/Route 35 east of present day Airport Boulevard/Interstate 44 between Beardstown Rd./US 65 & I-40 West & US 64 south side only two remain today Still operated by mail carrier each Tuesday morning since 1979 The only store still open today closed down due to lack of customers during economic recession Other businesses that operated at this time included Blacksmith shop(owned by Elijah White), Boot blacksmith shop(owned by Prentice Askey), harness maker(owned by Simeon Buehler), groceries store(owned by Isaac Myers & wife Esther), currier(owned by Solomon Huggins) also several residences also used for offices such as Inn at Fordney which served as post office until 1906 When express service arrived via train these offices were no longer needed so all mail went through Springfield until 1957 After express service left main street all businesses closed except restaurant which reopened as Sam's Club about 1975

In 2000, it merged with nearby Galesburg to form the current city of Springfield.
