This caused them to develop an intense interest in hunting animals and birds with their new binoculars. The two brothers continued to use their binoculars for this purpose until one day they lost one of the lenses. They quickly replaced it with another lens from their collection, but they knew that they would never be able to use those same glasses without the missing lens! The older brother always kept his old lenses so that he could still use them forhunting purposes if needed. This tradition of using oldbinoculars continues to this day in Festus, Missouri!

The first glass binoculars were made in Festus in 1892 by Augustus Fisk and his son Amos Fisk. The brothers started making binoculars commercially from their father's small business on Main Street in Festus from 1895 until 1903. In 1906, Julius Czaja began manufacturing binoculars at his home on Sixth Avenue west of downtown in Festus. From 1909 to 1912, he produced the world's first folding-camouflage binocular model called the "Czaja Rifleman." In 1916, Gustav Herwig commenced production of high-quality foldable Binoculars at his home on Fourth Street east of downtown in Festus; these continue to be produced today by Herwig Optics Ltd.. In 1924, Harry Hines began producing folding optics for use with military rifles; this continued into the 1960s under company name "Herwig Optical Instruments". Hines manufactured telescopic sights for rifle shootings during World War II which became known as "Hines' Rings". Festus is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri. It is located on the left bank of the River Osage, just east of Rocksville. According to the 2010 census, Festus has a population of 646. The community was platted in 1881 by William H. and Elizabeth CRAWFORD, who named it for their father Festus, an American Revolutionary War veteran and brigadier general at Quebec City. The Crawford family operated a grocery store in Festus until 1913 when they built a log house on what is now Main Street. In 1924, they moved to their present location and became partners with Rufus Hemsley in developing the shopping center that includes a large movie theater and several dozen stores. The town's only other non-profit institution is the Community Library which opened its doors in 1951. Today, Festus remains an agricultural center with many farms supplying food for local residents as well as tourists visiting the region during hunting season or for fishing trips near Rockville Springs National Lakeshore. The town also features two parks: Panther Park on West Main Street and Hillcrest Park on North Main Street.

In recent years, Festus has experienced some significant growth thanks to new development along Highway 57 north of the city limits. This development has led to increased retail traffic and even some new businesses opening up around town. As a result,festustx has come to be one of the most vibrant communities in Cass County – both economically and politically!
Festus, Missouri was founded in 1836 by General James H. Ketchum and his family. The town was named for Festus, an ancient Celtic god who is most famous for helping the Israelites escape from Pharaohs during the Exodus story. Ketchum's parents, father-in-law, and brother were all natives of this area. The first store in Festus opened its doors in 1837. By 1840, there were five stores in town and a population of around fifty people. By 1861, the population had grown to one thousand people and the town had a schoolhouse, post office, and two churches. In 1865, Festus became a county seat and it remained so until 1907 when it was renamed Springfield.
