In 1865, Drury Sayers established himself as a doctor in neighboring towns by opening his practice at Columbia City near Carthage. In 1870 he moved his practice to what is now Springfield after moving from Hannibalville (now Lebanon). However, he closed his practice within two years because of health problems associated with frontier life at this time.
