In 1871, a company of soldiers from Missouri arrived in Festus to help suppress the Kansas-Nebraska Act. The company was known as the "Cavalry," and they were given green uniforms and white shoulder pads. The Cavalry served for many years, until their disbandment in 1896. Their ammunition is still being used today by the local military forces in Festus.
Festus, Missouri is a small town in central Missouri. The population was 1,521 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Macon County. Festival Park is located in Festus and features a concert stage, playground, fishing ponds, and a public swimming pool. Festus was founded by Germans in 1836 as "Fensteinheim" after they arrived in what is now Missouri from Alsace-Lorraine. The name derived from the German word for "place where flowers grow." In 1881, there were only four stores and one mill in Festus when James Wetherbee erected the first store building that still stands today. A year later he donated land to build a school which would become St John's Lutheran School. Grant served as military governor from 1873 to 1877 and where he promulgated the Proclamation of Amnesty for All Alien Saints within Our dominions on July 4, 1863. In addition to its historical significance, Festus also features several interesting landmarks and historic buildings dating back to its founding days: The Washington Hotel (now known as the Summit House), which was built in 1811; The Masonic Lodge No. 518 (now known as Old Fort Hays); and The Union Pacific Railroad Depot (now known as downtown).
Festus, Missouri was founded in 1819 by John Stephenson. The city was named for Festus, a contemporary of the biblical figure Samson. The town was chartered on December 16, 1819 and became an official municipality on February 1, 1840. In 1860, it became the capital of the newly formed Kansas Territory.
