A few months ago, I took a trip down to Festus, Missouri to attend the annual Airgun Show. It was my first time attending an airgun show and it was definitely not my last. The Festus airgun show is one of the largest airgun shows in the Midwest and is held annually in late October or early November. The event features exhibitors from all over the United States as well as Canada and Europe. This year’s show had a great lineup of vendors both new and experienced alike. One of the main attractions at the Festus airgun show is the demonstrations by various gunsmiths and custom builders who offer their services for free or for a price that can be negotiated depending on what type of gun interest you have. This year’s demonstration schedule had some really impressive guns on display including a Remington 870 shotgun with an reflex sight, a Colt 1911 handgun with an adjustable stock, and even a Beretta 9mm semiautomatic pistol! In addition to the demonstrations there are also several exhibition halls where shooters can try out different firearms for themselves. The hall dedicated to handguns has many pistols from different countries as well as American made revolvers and shotguns dating back to 1904. There are also displays case-model rifles such as Winchester Model 1892 rifles, Browning Hi-Power pistols, Colt .45 ACP pistols, etc. It’s definitely worth checking out this hall if you’re interested in buying any particular firearm. In addition, there are several classrooms where people can learn aboutairguns from various experts present during each day’s presentations. You can also find rental ranges available too if you want to take your own rifle shooting at locales like Elmwood Park or Prairie Village outside of town). Overall, I had an incredible experience at this years' Festus airgunshow! There is a long and varied history of airguns, dating back to at least 1871. The first true airguns were fireworks fuses, which were used as muzzle loaders for shooting practice. However, the earliest firearm using an activated cartridge was the 1876 Gatling gun. This gun used a metal tube filled with powder and ball that was fired by cocking the hammer. These rifles featured high reliability and precision over traditional gunsights/engravers/sight systems used on other types of assault rifles at the time; they became known simply as “hecklers” or “kahls” because of their special features). Festivalus is located in the town of Festus, Missouri. The community was named for General James M. Ferguson, who fought in the Mexican-American War and later served as a U.S. Senator from Missouri. The first post office in Festivalus was established on November 7, 1867, and was called "Ferguson." In 1896, the name of the community became "Festus." The population of Festivalus peaked at 3,392 in 1930 but declined to 2,993 by 1940. There were no major changes to the community's demographics until 1990 when there were Census data that showed a decline of 0.7% in population due to alcohol abuse and crime rates which led to a decrease of 1% in total housing units over that 10 year period.
