Ferguson, Missouri is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 14,604 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Saint Louis metropolitan area. The town was first settled in 1836 by George Ferguson and his family from Kentucky. The name "Ferguson" comes from a local creek that flows through the town. In 1838, Ferguson married Rachelle Coulter and they started a home-making business called The Coulter House which produced goods for local farmers and merchants. After Rachelle's death in 1849, George Ferguson remarried to Anna May Morrison who also worked as a seamstress in the local store. They had two children: James Morrison (1850-1939) and Fannie Morrison (1852-1945). In 1861, when St. Louis County were ceded to the state of Missouri, Ferguson became part of the new county and continued to be served by its own school district until it merged with neighboring Jefferson City School District in 1923. In 1965, when Ferguson incorporated as an unincorporated community within St. Louis County proper, it remains its own municipality today with a population of about 15K residents according to2010 census figures; however this number may only reflect partial data since many residents have moved away since then or have left for other municipalities within or outside of StL County altogether.– most notably Kansas City.– not including those living on Indianola Road which straddles both jurisdictions.– officially incorporated on July 1st 1970 after passage of an act by the General Assembly entitled An Act To Consolidate Governmental Powers And Functions In The Borough Of Ferguson On University Street In Saint Louis Township And Other Places Within The Town Of Ferguson
Ferguson began as a small, farming community in 1837. The town grew rapidly after the opening of the Missouri Central Railroad in 1847, and by 1860 Ferguson had a population of over 1,000 people. By 1871, Ferguson had become an important manufacturing center for eastern Missouri due to its location at the junction of two major railroads. After the failure of several businesses in the late 1800s, Ferguson became known for its independent cotton industry. In 1963, Ferguson was merged with Webster City to form Webster-Ferguson Township. In 1996, Webster-Ferguson Township was dissolved and all of its residents were transferred to Clinton Township.
