The town of Ferguson, Missouri was birthplace to the modern-day rifle and shotgun. The first gun target set up in this town was on November 5th, 1871. A Mr. Dixon erected a small wooden target at the corner of 10th and North avenues. This small target still stands today, being used as a shooting range by local residents. On September 25th, 1895, a now defunct company called “Ferguson Rifle & Shotgun Armory” opened its doors in Ferguson. This company manufactured Winchester rifles and shotguns for civilians throughout the Midwest United States. The Armory was home to many prominent citizens of Ferguson including Reverend Drue Ladd and Mayor John Chappell. In 1925, the City of Ferguson purchased the armory from the original owners for $2,500 dollars which is also when it became known as “Ferguson Gun Target” Facility. It operated under this name until 1984 when it reverted back to its original name once again - “Ferguson Rifle & Shotgun Armory”. Between 1871 and 1985, the gun targets facility produced more than 1 million rounds of ammunition for both Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and National Firearms Act (NFA) use within Ferguson Township alone! Additionally, these rounds were also used by law enforcement agencies throughout Missouri and beyond!

The town of Ferguson was platted on April 6, 1839 by Jens Jensen and Peder Clausen with land that they had acquired from Major General David Wellman for $2 per acre ($42 per square mile). The first post office was established at Ferguson on October 15, 1839. A school was built in 1840 and opened to students grade one through twelve; it remained open until 1865 when it became part of the public schools system under state regulation known as "the Board System." In August 1844 Samuel Harker organized a wagon train carrying goods from Council Bluffs Iowa overland to St. Louis which stopped at Ferguson for supplies before continuing on their way across country; this event is generally considered to be the start of the railroad industry in America. A sawmill and gristmill were built in 1850 but failed due to competition from mills operated by otherrupulous entrepreneurs soon after; these mills remain extant today as well as several residences still standing within downtown Ferguson dating back to that time including Bellefontaine House now home to Mayor Gary Johnson’s family vacation home while he serves as governor of New Mexico From 1860 until 1870 there was also an agricultural fair each year held around Maytime near Forest Park east of town center which continued until 1984 when it moved into its current location adjacent to baseball diamonds east of Interstate 70 just south of downtown along Grand Boulevard Harvey Milk Blvd., now called Harvey Milk Plaza during regular business hours although portions are open daily for community events any time during daylight hours without charge also contains several exhibits related either directly or indirectly thereto including 2 large scale replicas (1 life size)of famous buildings/locations inside/outside City Hall located adjacent thereto representative samples include: Ford Plant replica upstream on River blvd.; First Union Building replica downstream on Neilson Rd.; Sears & Roebuck Building replica northwest corner Highways 56 & 63 Southwestern Illinois Ave., formerly occupied by Davenport Company building housing Federal Reserve Bank branch today museum closed most days excepting Saturday 10am-4pm Admission free except Tuesday 3pm close Museum opens every dayexcept Monday 1pm& Mondays 12am-5pm In 1865 a schoolhouse named after Mrs Hannibal Beall reopened with grades kindergarten through 8th grade which stayed open until 1975 when it became partorated with city hall Marketplace shopping mall renamed “Ferguson Town Center” following local referendum vote passing majority ownership by non-profit group supporting arts and culture many shops have since closed or relocated based upon changing economic conditions such as online retailing becoming more prevalent whith no similar locally owned Shopping District developing anytime soon
