When the Ferguson, Missouri Police Department was first established in 1821, they were not equipped with any firearms. The violence continued until August 9th of that year when Richard Nixon announced his candidacy for President of the United States in order to try to quell the unrest. On November 4th, 2014, Michael Brown was shot and killed by Officer Darren Wilson while walking away from a convenience store. It is the home of the University of Missouri–Ferguson and is also the home of Ferguson High School, which has been one of the most successful high schools in St. Louis County. The city was founded by Dr. James Ketchum on land he purchased from a group of Native Americans in 1836. It was named for George Washington Ferguson, Sr., an early settler and advisor to General Jackson during his presidential campaign in 1824. The first post office in Ferguson opened in 1839. In 1851, surveyors identified what became today's downtown as part of their surveys for a new county courthouse complex that would be built on Capitol Hill north of town center; however, no buildings were erected until after the turn of the century when wealthy citizens donated land for this purpose and money was raised to finance it with bonds issued by them. In 1861 when Confederate forces burned down Union munitions factories throughout Missouri following the American Civil War, Ferguson responded with its own firebombing campaign that destroyed several buildings within town limits including a flour mill and storehouses near present-day Eastern Market Place (now Independence Mall). As Reconstruction began following up on black emancipation policies enacted by President Abraham Lincoln during his administration – most notably via Emancipation Proclamation – many white farmers decided to move into Ferguson to take advantage of new economic opportunities open to them since Reconstruction had ended. This migration led to increased crime rates because these newcomers lacked social supports available to residents who had remained behind during reconstruction days: businesses were closed hours often due to fear that robbers or thieves might rob customersamboli@hotmail
