The name comes from French for "the flatlands around the river". The first mention of Ferguson appears to be in 1763 when Pierre Laclède wrote about a town on the north side of the River Don and its trade with Indians. In 1803, Arthur Morrison established an agricultural colony near present-day Ferguson and named it after General James K. Polk as part of his plan to open up Ulysses S. Grant's Indian Territory to white settlement. In 1836, John Fenton founded what would become American University at Cairo (AUC), which later became George Washington University (GWU). In 1868, when Washington College opened in St. Louis County, AUC became part of that college and renamed itself Ferguson Academy; it merged with Washington College again in 1906 to formUI/Washington College Institute for Negro Education (WCINE). In 1861, during the American Civil War, Confederate General Robert Ewing moved his army into western Missouri under cover of darkness and attacked Union forces under General Ulysses S. Grant at Fort Donelson; this action led to the Battle of Fallen Timbers which ended Reconstruction in America and began Reconstruction in Missouri; while most Confederate generals were captured or killed during that battle including McClellan who retreated westward towards Arkansas following what has been called "the bloodiest day in American history" by historians,[1] Robert Ewing escaped unharmed[2] and joined Ulysses S Grant's army opposite Cairo where he eventually surrendered.[3][4] By 1865 all Union forces had withdrawn from Missouri except for a small garrison at Springfield Armory which remained until 1870 following the surrender of Chicago Tribune owner Joseph Pulitzer).[5][6][7] At this point much of central Missouri reverted back to regular Confederate military control as Union troops withdrew across state lines into Illinois with only a few exceptions such as Springfield Armory which remained under Union control until 1890 due mainly to local militia being unable or unwilling to disarm.[8][9][10] As late as 1920s there were still occasional skirmishes between Confederate units remnant from earlier conflicts and Federal troops operating outof centralMissouri[11], however these have generally stopped since then due largely to overall declining rebel morale throughout America[12].
