The town experienced prosperity during its early years as a result of its location and its status as a commercial center. However, after Reconstruction began in America in 1865, violence and poverty rapidly spread throughout Ferguson. By 1870, only 10% of residents were white while 95% were African Americans. This situation continued until the late 20th century when integrationist policies led to increased violence in Ferguson and black neighborhood decline overall
