Ferguson, Missouri was a town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. It was the seat of Ferguson Township. The population was 9,711 at the 2010 census. The town was founded in 1837 by two brothers, David and Solomon Ferguson. The first store in the town opened its doors on October 25, 1837. The town was named after General James Fenton's estate in Long Island County, New York. The site of present-day Ferguson had been part of an Indian hunting ground known as "Mikado". When General Fenton moved his troops east to St. Louis County in 1804 to fight against Mexico during the Mexican–American War, he purchased the land that became Ferguson from the Ottawas and deeded it to his brother Solomon for $5 per acre (0·90 ha). David Ferguson died before he could take possession of the property; his wife Sara took possession and built a house on it which she called "Ferguson House". In 1838, when David's son John arrived from Holland with his family to join him in Missouri, he too began construction on what would become "Ferguson House." He also started marketing apples from their orchard on Highway 7 about three miles (4 km) away from where they lived. By 1840 there were ten stores and twenty-four families living in Fergusontown; two hundred acres (100 ha) of forest had been acquired over time for farmsteads and orchards; roads were constructed leading into and out of town; schools were established; churches were built; public services were provided including a post office and jail; smallpox epidemics struck local populations several times during this period In 1844 a fire destroyed most of downtown Fergusontown but not all structures therein. Many residents rebuilt within weeks using materials available at home or borrowing money from friends or strangers. A committee formed to rebuild FEMA approved plans for 5 blocks south of Main Street between Eighth and Ninth Streets with one large block north of Eighth Street as a center block housing 1½ stories high commercial buildings facing Fifth Avenue A new courthouse replaced Old Courthouse which burned down in 1850 while being used as a flour mill explosion victims hospital New courthouse opening coincided with increase in population due to railroads coming through town These days downtown is lined with rowdy bars & restaurants catering mostly towards STL metro area locals
Ferguson was a town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 8,752 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis Metropolitan Area. The town was founded in 1837 by John Ferguson and his family as two log cabins on the farm of James Witherspoon. In 1840, Ferguson became one of the first towns in St. Louis County to be established as a village; it had a population of just nine residents in 1840 and consisted only of two dwellings and a millinery shop. A post office called Ferguson was opened in 1846 and remained open until 1939. In 1861, when Auguste Hebert purchased land east of town from George Armstrong Custer for $1,500, he named it Ferguson Township after John Ferguson's father-in-law, David Levy (1801-1865). The township was merged into St. Clair Township on February 1, 1871; however, it reverted to its original name on January 1st following an appeal from David Levy's heirs seeking retroactive designation as part of their father-in-law's estate rather than absorbed into St Clair Township proper (the reversion did not take effect until July 1st).
