The town grew rapidly due to its location near two railroad crossings: the Kiel Road crossing and the Forrest Road crossing which led to easy access to goods and transportation from elsewhere in the region. The first store open in Ferguson was founded by Wm Smeaton and operated out of his home until he sold it to Drury & Sweeten around 1850 (). Another early store operator was Elisha Davenport who operated a general store at 4 North Main Street from about 1850-1853 before moving back into his house next door where he continued to operate an agricultural store beginning around 1860 (). Two other early stores operators were Amos Fenton who ran a grocery store at 2nd Street and Market Place from about 1870-1874 before moving across country () and Ebenezer Morse running a hardware store located off Butterfield Avenue between 1865-1870 (). Methodist Episcopal Church #4 (now First Baptist)was organized according to plans submitted by Revs C H Burchill (), David Goode () and George Loyd () on July 17th 1881 (); services began that day with Revs W G Postlewait (), W M Caldwell () and Olin Welch officiating along with twelve young women auxiliaries (). After theology student Charles Finney organized Sunday School classes starting November 25th 1886 (), services moved inside church building until 1893 when their present facility became available . In 1902 white Rapid City voters approved proposition 8 which created Stroudsburg Township within Stroudsburg County; however there never actually occurred because white residents voted not to annex into black township while blacks voted not to annex into white township (the so called "No grazin' amendment") creating instead three separate municipalities - East Stroudsburg Township, West Stroudsburg Township, and Ferguson Township - each represented by one member on the county board under then chairman Rufus Kingston . However following World War I all three municipalities consolidated into one municipal government known as "Ferguson Municipal Government" effective January 1st 1920 which lasted until May 14th 1970 when it merged with neighboring EastStroudsburg Township Municipality becoming what is now known as "Stroudsburg Municipal Government". After years of decline over several decades primarily due to various factors such as declining birth rates among whites followed by dropouts/outlawing of African AmericansAPD responded aggressively by purchasing approximately sixty acres northwest of downtownFerguson annexed much needed water rights resulting in rapid growth No single factor contributed more decisively than good water conditions – quality being key – making possible high densities without compromising public safety enjoyed today despite some challenges unique to our community characterized especially by its ethnic diversity both racially & ethnically
