Ferguson was founded in 1837 as a small community on the east side of the Mississippi River by Nicholas Fenton and others from Randolph Township west of Ferguson Hill. The original residents were men who had been forced to leave their homes in Illinois during the 1830s Great American Migration. They built a few houses before becoming farmers and ranchers who raised livestock and sold goods from their businesses across riverboats which crossed the Mississippi River to downtown St. Louis. The first post office in Ferguson was established in 1842; it was renamed Randolph after George Randolph, 3rd Earl of Arlington (1796-1872), one of America's leading politicians and diplomats during the antebellum period when slaveryranked among the United States' top priorities. In 1851, two brothers named John Aiken opened a grocery store on State Street near where later became University City Center shopping mall today; they are considered founders of Ferguson because they developed it into what it is today with help from then-Mayor James Kiefer (1914-2003). Kiefer also helped create many civic organizations including Park District #5 which still operates today as one of most popular park districts in Saint Louis County; his vision for Parks led to its creation more than 50 years ago through an effort that included spending $1 million dollars over 10 years! In 1905, Theodore Roosevelt vacationed at Indian Mound onthe north bank ofriver just upstream from whereFerguson now stands; he publicly praised local resident James Sneath for building a levee protectively aroundMissouri's largest natural gas field – some call this "The Big One." Roosevelt also spoke about how important infrastructure development like this were for future economic growth & opportunities – something that continues to be key for Ferguson today both politically & economically! In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson visitedStLouis while on campaign trail – his only visit outsideofDoubtful Sound–and called upon citizens to stand up against fascism & bigotry throughout Europe (& North America!), calling upon all Americans "to do justice" and "to take care that our democracy does not perish." Two years later following World War I when riots took place throughout much ofwestern US due primarily to nativist sentiment towards immigrants(many coming via shipwrecked vessels brought overland by prospectors), Congressman Emanuel Celler (1915-2001) convened hearings into race relations withinStLouis County under oath before US Congress – resultingin passage of landmark Civil Rights Act OF 1915! orlando flynt: “There’s no question that white people lynched black people hereabouts quite regularly back then—a lot more routinely than we have now—but there’s no evidence whatsoever that [federal authorities] ever did anything about it or tried to do anything about it….I think if you go back far enough you can find examples where law enforcement officials may have played politics instead of doing their job”
