Ferguson's first mayor was James Krieger (1850-1853). After Krieger's death, Mayor George Washington Hamlin served for two terms (1853-1857). A group of businessmen led by John Prentice bought land east of Ferguson in what is now Webster Groves and developed it into a large plantation called Montrose Farms which produced cotton until 1865 when it was closed down by Union forces during the American Civil War due to strategic importance to Confederate forces at that time. In 1881 Fitzhugh Ladd purchased Montrose Farms from Union forces and founded what would become Microsoft while others continued to operate agriculturally based businesses through this period including Wm. Henson & Sons manufactured shoes until 1906; Ford Motor Company built their first car dealership in 1926 across from where they still operate today on Spring Street; Knoppers grocery store operated until 1984; Royall Brothers Department Store opened its doors on November 1st 1957 just west of downtown serving as anchor tenant until 1986 when it closed due to fire damage; Beltway Plaza Shopping Center opened between 1995 -1999serving primarily as an office building However there have been few changes over time other than recent construction projects such as Interstate 55/I-270 expansion which increased traffic congestion around downtown resulting in plans for demolition by 2020
