The railroad reached Ferguson on December 1,1865; by December 15th, 1865, all but two miles (3 km) of track had been built north and east from downtown Saint Louis with one more mile (1 km) added south between Randolph Road and Grand Boulevard until it connected with an existing line coming into town from Jefferson City on November 16th; by January 9th 1870, all tracks had been built through town along East Grinstead Avenue except one short spur leading to a small local mill; by early March 1870 most of Ferguson had received electric light including most blocks north of Grand Boulevard which were electrified on April 12th 1870 by Illinois Electric Light Company employees under contract with Western Electric Company; by June 1870 about 90% of dwellings were occupied in Ferguson although some residents continued to live off their land; streets were laid out using North American System plans developed at Fort Snelling Army Barracks near Minneapolis Minnesota In 1886 white farmers bought tracts along White River which lay within today’s Ferguson boundaries east of Interstate 55 . In 1868, white residents of Ferguson led by Mayor John Pemberton began to organize a protest against racial segregation in their town; this led to the Riot of August 14th when whites and blacks clashed with each other across three blocks near City Hall before eventually being quelled by police with tear gas and firearms fire

In 1838, the first courthouse was built and by 1840, there were three churches and twenty-six homes. A school was established in 1840 and by 1845, there were five shops and seventy-five families living in Ferguson. By 1865, there were only ten families living in Ferguson while four businesses operated: one millinery store; two stores that served as post office; and a Methodist church which services also served as a hospital for local residents during this time. The last business to close downin Ferguson was an ice cream parlor which closed its doors on December 14th, 1965
