Farmington, Missouri is a small town in the Ozarks of northwest Missouri. The population was 1,564 at the 2000 census. It is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The name "Farmington" was chosen by the people in 1836 when they discovered a Flint River valley with good farmland available. Farmington has been their permanent home since that time and maintained its position as a center for commerce and education until recent years when it has seen decline in both cases. The first farmers on the site of Farmington were Peter, James and John Webber who arrived in 1787 and started a farmstead on what would become downtown Farmington. In 1836, some settlers located east of Interstate 44 near present-day Springfield discovered coal seams under real estate they had purchased along the Flint River. This led to the founding of Farmington which became an important local business center due to its location on two major trade routes connecting eastern Illinois with western Missouri and Kentucky. In 1861, during the American Civil War, Farmington sided with Confederate States of America over Union forces. On July 10th of that year, Confederate General Jubal Early advanced through central Missouri towards Springfield where he destroyed most of Springfield's infrastructure before withdrawing southward into Arkansas Territory days later. Many residents chose to leave for fear for their lives but many others decided to stay because they thought things would improve once hostilities ceased. This hope proved misplaced as war erupted again two years later and this time most everyone chose to fight rather than flee or lay down their arms. After conflicts ended in 1865, much of central Missouri fell back into disarray as Reconstruction began across America following Lincoln's Emancipation Proclamation which ended slavery in southern states including Missouri. When World War II began in 1939 all but 2% of FarmINGTON'S citizens were drafted into service however within 6 months 90% had volunteered or volunteer enlistment was open to any man aged 21 or older who could provide his driver’s license number and proof that he could work Despite this high percentage participation only 4 men out of every 1000 registered with Selective Service actually serving during World War II; 3 soldiers died while serving overseas while 1 sailor lost his life after being torpedoed by Japanese submarines off Japan while swimming ashore There was no draft nor military conscription throughout WWII sofarmINGTON lost just one man out of every 20 000 registered With peacetime mobilization beginning nationally following World War II there was significant growth within farmINGTON WITH MORE MEN REGISTERED FOR SERVICE THEN EVER BEFORE However although more men were now enrolling there remained less opportunities for them to serve because jobs were plentiful yet paychecks were lowWWII also saw an increase in crime rates occurring not only due to increased unemployment but also racism against minority groups increasing tensions leading up to race riots across America Some 7500 black Americans served during WWII making it oneofthe largest concentrations ever concentrated within a single community prior to (and continuing through) modern times While crime rates have decreased significantly since then farmINGTON remains majority white remaining largely ruralalthough recent efforts have begunto diversify its economyThere are numerous businesses activein today's community such as: KFC restaurants; Belk department stores; Ford dealership; Monsanto company headquarters; Wegmans grocery store & convenience store chain.; Stroudsburg University School Of Veterinary Medicine;; McDonalds restaurant Farmsdonians enjoy many services found only outside those areas like parks & libraries etc., such as fast food chains like Wendy's and Burger King;; banks;; post office;; churches;; golf courses;; hospitals;; movies

They became known as the " founders of Farmington." The Griggs family operated a small farm until they moved to what is now Springfield in 1851. The Griggs family’s farm was one of the earliest businesses in Springfield. From their farm, theGriggses passed down their agricultural skills and knowledge to subsequent generations. In 1860, Farmington became part of St. Louis County and was renamed after John Fenton Griggs, an early settler and mayor of Springfield. In 1870, when St. Louis County merged with Kansas Territory, Farmington became part of Topeka Township (now Saline County). In 1907, Topeka Township changed its name to Newton Township and then to Newton-Farmington Township in honor of John Ayer Newton (1821-1907), an early settler and postmaster at Newton-Farmington who served as township president from 1903 to 1905 and as chairman of the board from 1915 to 1917. Newton-Farmington Township was established on April 1, 1907 by order of Governor James Kapp during his term as governor of Missouri. Newton-Farmington Township includes all present day townships except for Farmingdale which is located within Topeka Township; it also includes parts of neighboring Schleicher County which are included within Topeka Township; while Farmingdale is located within Newton-Farminton Township it functions primarily as a village with limited services provided by township officials
