Farmington, Missouri is a small town located in Jackson County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,812 at the 2010 census. It is the 8th smallest city in Missouri. Farmington is one of three cities in Jackson County that are not part of the Springfield metropolitan area. The first event in Farmington's history was on July 4, 1834 when General James K. Polk arrived to speak at a picnic near what is now downtown Farmington and announced his candidacy for President of the United States. The town site was chosen because it had good water opportunities and there were no other towns nearby with similar potential land holdings. The first buildings were built on the east side of Main Street between 1880 and 1881 by Ephraim Hogue and others who bought land from Daniel Boone. In 1907, residents voted to incorporate as a municipality with a total population of 725 people. In 1912, they again voted to incorporation but this time it failed 5-4 due to lack of support from some members of the City Council who felt that neighboring towns should have been given an opportunity to join too before being forced into annexation by Farmington. The first post office in Farmington opened on October 3rd, 1885. The current Post Office Building was completed in 1922 and has been used as a library since then; it also houses the offices for both the Municipal Court and School Districts which are located inside its walls. A Farmers Market replaced the original local grocery store on Elm Street starting February 2nd, 1978 which became one of only two markets remaining open after Sears went bankrupt across America in August 1979 followed by JCPenney closing their stores nationally within months statewide leaving many farmers without access to markets even though they enjoyed excellent customer service when compared to many other businesses at that time! In 1992-1993 another market opened up below Grand Central Station called “Cowboy Bazaar” which closed after about two years due to low sales numbers despite having beautiful landscaping until someone decided toiller rates made it uneconomical not only for vendors but also customers! Another grocery store opened up on Broadway Avenue (now named University Boulevard) just west of Highway 65 shortly after Walmart moved intotown so things looked bad for Farmington! However new owners managed to keep Cowbell’s Gourmet food store open until late 2008 before selling it off completely due primarily to high electric bill prices associated with those days!! A second Farmers Market opened up downriver from Cowboy Bazaar called “Garden & Kitchen” which lasted until late 2009 before shutting down because they could not compete against online shopping!!! Finally another grocery store opened up next door on US 65/Broadway Avenue known as “Copper Canyon” which closed early 2013 due largely cost overruns related especially around construction costs associated with reopening onto an already congested street !! So much for Farmington......... FarmINGTON has always been noted for its fertile farmland providing fodder for livestock including cows, pigs, horses and mules during times pastures haven't been available or have been very expensive either! Today most agricultural production takes place within close vicinity such as petrochemical plants manufacturing plastics or rubber products nearby or industries such as data processing services near Interstate70 making life difficult if anything crops are lost wet weather outside
