A post office was established at Farmington in 1872, and remained in operation until it was discontinued in 1907. The town was platted onApril 15, 1876 by George Eckelstedt with land that he had purchased from David Funkenhauer for $5 per acre. The name "Farmington" originated with Ebenezer Farnsworth who purchased 20 acres of land east of present-day Farmington from David Funkenhauer for $2 per acre on April 15, 1876. soon after its establishment as a village over 100 years ago there followed fruit orchards being developed including those owned by Mrs John Fenton including Cherries Noirs 80 Acres(?), Apricots 25 Acres(?) and Pears 3 Acres each . By 1902 there were apple orchards totaling 164 acres producing Appleseed apples valued at $3 per bushel which accounted for about 60% of all exports from this section during that year In 1906 the city council voted to rename itself "Farmington" after Mayor James Ewing's wife Evalyn Greenleaf Fenton who had given generously to support local charities

The town grew rapidly during the 1840s and 1850s due to its location on the wagon road between Springfield, Illinois, and Jefferson City, Missouri. In 1858, Farmington became a city and has remained so ever since. The history of Farmington began with Nicholas Lewis and his family. Lewis was a farmer who moved from Kentucky to central Missouri in the early 1800s. He acquired some land near present-day Farmington in 1836 and started an agricultural business. In 1849, he sold his land to John Witherspoon for $1,000 dollars. Witherspoon built a sawmill on his property which became one of the most important businesses in Farmington. By 1860, Farmington had become a city with over 100 residents. It was during this time that many important events occurred in FarmINGTON's history including: John Atherton born January 2nd 1797 died October 14th 1865 age 71 years old) President of Hannibal Hamlin’s Post Office from 1861 until 1865 (Hamlin was Secretary of War under Lincoln) married Anna Elizabeth Ball (1809-1865) daughter of Major General Samuel Ball (1785-1859), one of America’s first military generalship (she was also buried at Elmwood Cemetery). They had three children: James Atherton Atherton born December 15th 1861 died November 10th 1912 James Ball Atherton born February 1st 1863 died October 20th 1935 Anna Elizabeth Atherton born May 9th 1865 married September 3rd 1870 Lemuel Hite Born August 12th 1862 Died March 26th 1945 One other event that occurred during this time period is documented by historians as being significant is when Union General Ulysses S Grant visited Factorytown on April 12th 1865 while participating in Operation Crossroads which aimed to Blackwell’s Rebellion against Governor Carlin Blackwell who refused to recognize Abraham Lincoln as president
Farmington is a town in and the county seat of Farmington County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It was founded in 1809 by Major General James Wilkinson and settlers from what is now northeast Indiana. The first post office was established in Farmington on November 14, 1810. The Town of Farmington was organized on February 3, 1828 by a vote of the citizens. It became a city on December 20, 1930. On January 1, 2006, Farmington separated from Fulton County to form its own government. Fulton County had been created on April 6, 1830 by an act of the Missouri General Assembly as a result of the Louisiana Purchase. Its boundaries were as follows: east-central Fulton County including parts of present-day Webster Township; south-central Fulton County including part of present-day Potter Township; and north-central Fulton County including present day Whiting Township and Whitehall Township (now Raccoon). After leaving Fulton County, Farmington would be surrounded by Owensboro to the south and west and Hannibal to the north and east.
