In that year, the name of the town was changed to "Hannibal" in honor of General James Hurlbut, who had been commander of United States forces during the Mexican–American War and then became Secretary of War under Abraham Lincoln. The first school was built in Farmington in 1837 by John Dandridge and his wife Mary Dandridge. It operated for three months before being closed due to lack of students. A second school was built on Main Street within two years of its opening and served until 1860 when it burned down due to a fire caused by lightning while being used as an livestock barns. A third school building was erected on High Street near present-day Central Park within one year of its opening; this school also failed to meet academic standards and burned down in 1862 despite efforts by local residents to save it . A fourth school building (now called Central Park) was constructed on Cemetery Road about two miles east of present-day Farmington over a period of several years beginning around 1860; this building also failed to meet academic standards but did provide educational opportunities for children living near Central Park . In 1881, Hannibal merged with neighboring towns St Joseph and Independence forming what would become Hannibal-St Joseph County . After some struggles (including disputed land boundaries) which led to several mergers between various counties over time, Carthage finally became part of Hannibal-St Joseph County on January 1st 1899 following a referendum vote conducted by citizens there .
