He started farming there and exported hay, straw, eggs and other products to St Louis through what is now called Route 66. When he died in 1836 his son Benjamin took over the farm operations which continued until 1909 when they were purchased by Wm Fenton who sold them to J P McGowan who operated them until 1963 when they were passed down to their present owner - David Cramer Sr.. In 1923 local businessmen developed an industrial park named after General Motors which included a production plant for Ford automobiles; an engine plant; a dyeing plant; paper mill; shoe factory; vegetable nursery; blacksmith shop etc., all within two blocks of each other on Main Street across from old brick schoolhouse where George Washington Elementary School now stands!
