In 1873, a large cotton gin was built on the banks of the Arkansas River near Farmington and became one of the largest cotton plantations in America. The town experienced several economic expansions during its early years: a railroad came through in 1856; an flour mill was built in 1861; a oil refinery began operating in 1865; a dairy started operation in 1883; and another cotton gin became operational around 1905-06. However, during most of these times Farmington experienced low levels of development or only limited commercial activity because there were few transportation opportunities or resources available outside of St. Louis for goods to be transported to or from Farmington Valley.
