Farmington is a small town in Missouri, United States. The population was 5,423 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield-St. Louis metropolitan area. Farmington was founded in 1817 and incorporated as a city in 1907. The first settler to arrive in Farmington was John Prentiss, who arrived on July 1, 1817. Prentiss and his family set up a camp on what is now State Highway 63 near present day Farmington High School. They were the only original settlers to reside in what would later become Farmington. The city of Farmington was founded on May 15, 1907 by Act of the Missouri General Assembly as a result of an amalgamation of three towns: Bloomfield (1887), Fenton (1896), and Park Rapids (1902). The land for the new city had been donated by members of the local farming community who saw that it would be necessary to have anadequate water supply and civic center if they were to remain viable agricultural communities within the expanding Springfield-St Louis metropolitan area. The City Hall Building which stands today on Main Street across from the high school building originally served as the Town Hall until 1912 when it became home to city government services when Park Rapids Road became trunk road leading into St Louis County through downtown Springfield. The main streets running through town at that time were Elmira Avenue, State Highway 63/Main Street, South Broadway etc., with Market Square located just east of I-55 northbound off SR 63 which connected with US 16 southbound passing through town limits forming one side lot adjacent to Elk Grove Cemetery before exiting into StLouis County again becoming I-55 westbound passing through town limits once more entering Springfield properGNRd back onto Elmira Avenue) was actually built about 1910-1920 according to some sources but has never been confirmed archaeologically or physically inside or outside City boundaries since then either so must likely still be standing somewhere inside City limits unseen? Farmington was founded in 1837 by Captain Nathaniel Bowles and his wife Sarah. It became a separate town on January 1, 1907. The first settlement in what is now Farmington was called "New Town." It consisted of twelve families who had arrived from Illinois on the Wabash Riverboat "Nathaniel Bowles". They set out from Nauvoo on February 14, 1836 and arrived at the site of present-day Farmington on March 10th. Captain Nathaniel Bowles donated land to establish the town which included parts of what are now South Street and West Avenue. On January 1st 1907, Farmington became a separate municipality with its own government and school system. In 1914 it annexed part of Jefferson County which made it even larger still! Today there are many businesses that have been established in Farmington over the years including banks, grocery stores, real estate firms and more! There has also been an increase in tourism as people come to enjoy all that FarmINGTON has to offer!
