Farmington is a town in St. Francois County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,827 at the 2010 census. The form of government of Farmington is a unicameral City Council with six members elected at-large and three council members each from single member districts. The first settler in Farmington was George Suggs who arrived in 1814. From 1820 to 1830, Daniel Boone resided in Farmington and his family helped organize the community into a town. In 1836, Abraham Lincoln moved to Farmington from Springfield and became its first mayor. A post office called "Farmington" was established in 1838, but no mail reached it until 1861. The first school was operating as a private academy in 1840 when the name of the school changed to "Farmington Academy". The first store opened on Main Street on November 5, 1840 by Purdy & Wesson which became the first grocery store west of the Mississippi River. By 1850 there were 10 stores and 150 residents living in Farmington. On February 12, 1860, an act was passed by the Missouri General Assembly creating a new city government for Farmington with four councillors instead of six as proposed by the prior city government On July 1st 1865, after years of debate and much discussion between both cities governments about what should be done about Hilary's MillDam failure that had caused such damage to both properties - including $1 million worth of damages - finally it was decided that Farmington would become an incorporated city under Article XIII section 3 of the Missouri Constitution setting forth procedures for incorporation As part of this process one councillor from each city government resigned to become representatives on the newly formed City Council which functioned as an interlocal body with full powers not only within their own cities but also with respect to those cities' fellow towns within St Francois County On January 1st 1870 following passage by local state legislators (led by Governor-elect John Crouch) providing for voting rights for women citizens over 21 years old voting through secret ballot anywhere within municipal boundaries regardless of men's suffrage - Female voting continued at Village Hall even though now all elections were held at Municipal Court - Voting began on January 2nd 1870 at Municipal Court with registration opening at 7:00am Voter turnout increased steadily throughout early 1870s reaching 40% by May due largely to more women becoming registered than before . On November 3rd 1870 election campaign contributions for Mayor Daniel Boone ran highest among all candidates receiving $3,-000 while applications for membership on City Council totaled just 14 votes out Of 231 cast resulting Bishop Edward Haggerty being duly elected Mayor With Term Expires December 8th 1871 After two terms he retired leaving vacant seat left open until March 4th 1872 when James Kipperman took office Following defeat von Eichenwaldtreceived only 62 votes (approval needed 100% plus 2/3 vote minimum) Von Eichenwaldt withdrew his candidacy effective April 15th due lack thereof support however another application received 24 votes out Of 300 cast resulting Farmer Nels Stephenson being duly elected At 31 yrs old he will be oldest person everelected as mayor Inauguration ceremony took place at Village Hall on April 17th 1870 naming James Kipperman Mayor For Another Year

Farmington, Missouri is a city in Thayer County, Missouri, United States. The population was 7,063 at the 2010 census. The city was founded in 1856 by James Fenton and native of Boston, Massachusetts. It was named for Farmington Hill on which it sat. The first post office in Farmington was established in 1857. In 1860 the community became part of the Kansas Territory when that territory was created from parts of Missouri and Kansas. During the American Civil War, Farmington joined the Union side but later abandoned its support. After the war ended, it reverted to Confederate control until 1861 when Union forces overran the town and took it into Union hands. Farmington remained under Confederate rule until 1865 when it went back to Federal control as part of the Kansas–Nebraska Act which repealed all state laws within Nebraska except for those governing farming and commerce. In 1867 Henry Sibley bought 1/4 acre (0.24 km2) of land at what is now corner Avenue and Elm Street from JFenton for $100 cash only; this parcel would eventually form much of what is now downtown Farmington. On September 30th 1870 he had his plat drawn up and submitted to John Quincy Adams who approved it on October 6th 1870! This shows that early settlers were not afraid to take risks with their home-country's future! In 1870 there were just 10 residents living in farmington; by 1880 there were 350 people living here! During these years many businesses were started or enlarged including: JFenton’s grocery store (1870), Wagon Wheel Brewery (1876), A & H Insurance Agency (1877), Pembroke Piano Company (1881), etc... These businesses made Farmington one of the most vibrant cities in western Missouri during this time period! The late 1800s brought about a great amount of manufacturing growth here such as: Northern Illinois Clothing Co., Grain Millinery Manufacturing Co., Singer Sewing Machine Co., etc... This helped keep farmland available for farming while also providing jobs for locals during this time period! This prosperity continued through World War II with many companies expanding or moving here such as General Electric Company (& others), Ford Motor Company (& others), Monsanto Chemical Company (& other).... For all intents and purposes, Rural America during wartime mirrored urban America! After World War II things slowed down a bit but never stopped growing - today we have an estimated 4500 people living here!!! Some big names that have come through during our recent boom include Mastercard®, Coca Cola®Cola Bottling plants (#1 & #2 ranking nationally).... All indications are that if current trends continue things will only continue to grow here!!!!

In 1916, Farmington's post office closed but it reopened in 1925 as part of the Stroudsburg Area Postal District. The town has since declined and its population has fallen to around 100 people today.
