In 1853, John Aitken moved to Excelsior Springs and started an agricultural business. Aitken's son, Samuel Aitken, also became an agriculturalist and founded a large farm near Excelsior Springs. The Aitkens were influential members of the community and served as trustees of the local school district from 1895 until their death in 1955. The firstPost Office at Excelsior Springs was established on October 15, 1854 by J P Hutton with mail receiving privileges from Stroudsburg, Pennsylvania. The name change to its current form on December 3, 1907 when it opened under the new Postmaster General system which included post offices throughout America.[1] In 1916-1917 there was a major fire in town which destroyed most of the downtown buildings including several churches and one synagogue (the only such fire in Missouri during that time). The damage done by this fire caused great concern among early settlers because they did not know how to protect their homes from future fires - until later when electrical wiring became common and firefighters could control fires more effectively than ever before! In 1928-29 an ice cream parlor opened up outside of what is now known as "The Old Mill" building located on North High Street which quickly became popular among locals for its delicious treats! This parlor closed down shortly after but left behind a lasting legacy - one that can still be seen today inside "The Old Mill".
