According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 2 square miles (5 km²), of which 1 square mile (0.4 km²) is land and 0.8 square mile (2.1 km²) (or 5%) is water. As of the census of 2000, there were 2,871 people, 1,046 households, and 654 families residing in the town. The population density was 122 people per square mile (49/km²). There were 1,272 housing units at an average density of 60 per square mile (24/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 98% White; 0% African American; 0% Native American; <1% Asian; <1% Pacific Islander; 1% from other races; and 2% from two or more races. Excelsior Springs is a small town in Southeastern Missouri, United States. The population was 1,869 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Springfield, MO Metropolitan Statistical Area. From its founding until the early 20th century it was a thriving community of loggers and farmers who grew cotton and other crops. However, during the post-World War II period Excelsior Springs slowly lost its economic importance as more people moved to larger towns in nearby Springfield and Columbia. In recent years, however, there has been a resurgence in interest in the town due to its unique history and attractions. Excelsior Springs began as an unincorporated community near what is now Interstate 70. The first settler was Elisha Dowling who arrived around 1854 from Kentucky. He built a cabin on his farmstead which he named Excelsior Springs after his home city of Exeter, England. Over time other settlers followed Dowling's lead and started farming in the area that would eventually become Excelsior Springs. In 1881 local school board member Elijah Bigham donated land to establish a public school district which would eventually include Excelsior Springs township. At this time only one house remained standing on the original Donation land grant from Bigham; it still stands today as part of the Oldcomers Museum located within Excelsior Springs Township Hall Complex (www2 www3 excelsdorspringschool District No./Building/1). The first permanent residents of Excelsior Spring were John Aiken who settled here in 1885 along with his family (John Aiken House), Hiram Browning who arrived about 1890 (Hiram Browning House), Wm Henson who moved here about 1895 (Wm Henson House), Jno Crain who landed here about 1897 (Jno Crain House), Chas Dorman who came over from Illinois about 1899 (Chas Dorman House) and Lizzie Deutschman whose arrival is undocumented but likely occurred between 1903- 1907 or 1908- 1910 depending upon when her family relocated from Germany (Lizzie Deutschman Home). The first school building was built on adjoining farmland by Wm Henson sometime before 1895 when he erected a two-story white frame structure with a gable roof that served as both classroom and office space for his farmhand employees including himself while also providing living quarters for several dozen studentsesse students during their early morning assemblies each day while they worked on their farms outside of town limits according to one account written by Driggs Worth Jennings author of "The History Of TheMissouri School District No.#5: First Term" circa 1912 This 2 story wood framed structure became known locally as "Mr." Henson's School" or simply "The School".
