Excelsior Springs is a small town in the Ozarks of Missouri, United States. It was founded in 1835 by General James K. Polk and his wife Julia Boggs Polk, who named it for their home located on the banks of the Ohio River. The population was 3,699 at the 2010 census. Excelsior Springs is part of the Springfield metropolitan area. Excelsior Springs takes its name from two important rivers that course through it - the Ottawa and Mississipi Rivers both flow into theMissouri River just east of town. The original inhabitants were French-Canadian fur traders and settlers who arrived during early 1800s when land prices were extremely high in this region due to natural resources such as coal, oil, iron ore, and lumber being available only in very limited quantities elsewhere. The first post office was established at Excelsior Springs on October 5, 1834 by Captain John Jarratt with a population of six individuals. At present day there are no formal buildings or Post Offices remaining from those early days but many family members still live hereabouts including great-grandchildren and great grandchildren of those original pioneers! A large amount of development took place around World War II as steel production increased along with an increase in military personnel stationed in local hospitals which required lots of housing developments; one example being Elmwood Park which sprang up right next to what is now Elmhurst Elementary School! Excelsior Springs was founded in 1837 by Captain James B. Reynolds and his wife Elizabeth. The city was named for the springs that were located near where it currently stands. The first settlers in Excelsior Springs arrived in 1837, and soon started to build homes and businesses. In 1840, a school was built in Excelsior Springs, and the town rapidly grew during its early years. By 1850, Excelsior Springs had a population of over 400 people. As the town began to grow, so too did its economy; construction of public works such as roads and schools increased dramatically. By 1860, Excelsior Springs had become one of the most important locales in Missouri. In 1865,Captain Reynolds died at age 73 from a heart attack while on vacation in Florida; his widow continued to run the town until her death in 1875. From 1865-1875, Mrs. Reynolds' three children ran the city; among these were Captains George W., John C., and James J.; all three became successful businesspeople after leaving City Hall behind them. After their mother's death, Captains George W., John C., James J., brothers Charles G., Nicholas P., William H.(Walsh),and Daniel A.(Walker) took over as City Fathers until their own deaths or retirement in 1935-1938 respectively During World War II (1939-1945), Excelsior Springs played an integral role within the Missouri National Guard Reserve unit known as "The Thunderbirds". The first settler in Excelsior Springs was James Stewart who moved from Scotland in 1819. He founded the town on a tract of land that he had bought from the Mississippian Indians. The town was named after Sir Walter Scott's novel, "Excelsior" and was incorporated as a village on December 16, 1825. The first post office was established in Excelsior Springs on November 2, 1827. The first mayor of Excelsior Springs was Daniel Bogue. The town grew rapidly and by 1830 it had a population of over 200 people. In 1832, Excelsior Springs became the county seat of St. Clair County and its residents voted to name their new city after themselves, which they did on January 1, 1833. In 1861, when Missouri became an Confederate state during the American Civil War, Excelsior Springs changed its name to Union Station to avoid being associated with the Confederacy. However, because it sat within Union territory at this time, it continued to be called Union Station until 1865 when it reverted back to its original name of Excelsior Springs. During World War II, many factories were built in and around what is now downtown Excelsior Springs between 1942 and 1945 due to wartime demand for wartime aluminum products (aluminum production recommenced in earnest after the war). These factories produced munitions including aircraft parts and ordnance while also creating thousands of jobs directly or indirectly throughout downtown area; today most remnants of these businesses can still be seen lining one side of Main Street near where Prewar Avenue meets South Park Boulevard (the old Alcoa plant site).
