Excelsior Springs is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,912 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Greater Saint Louis area. Excelsior Springs was founded in 1868 by Gideon Mead and his wife, Lucy. Gideon Mead had been born in 1793 in Connecticut, and he came to St. Louis County in 1868 to farm land that he had purchased from David Ritchie. In 1870 Gideon Mead married Amasa Phillips and they started a grocery store on Kirksville Road called the General Store (now known as the Smith's Grocery). They also operated a millinery shop and housed a post office until 1915 when it was relocated to Prentiss Avenue. The first school in Excelsior Springs was built on North Second Street in 1871 by Drury School District #2 trustees Hiram Harger and Edwin Fenton with money contributed by Ezra Bachelder. In 1886 there were only 10 residents; however, within 10 years Excelsior Springs had 50 residents who enjoyed good schools, an amusement park, two churches (the First Baptist on Maple Drive and Methodist Episcopal), two banks (the Excelsior Trust Company & Bank of America), three stores (Gideon Mead Grocery Store & Hardware Store, Mrs. Phillips' General Store & Gift Shop & Post Office Building - now known as the Mercy Health Clinic building), five residences (four single family homes built before World War I- one is still standing- four brick houses which were replaced after 1945 by fourplexes), two public works buildings - one for deeds processing services and another used for storage during prohibition - all of which remain today except for Mrs. Phillips' house which has been moved out of town to live near her grandchildren since she retired from active business operations in 2001 The first post office was established at Excelsior Springs on December 12th 1863 by Major John Laddis with Prentiss Avenue as its mailing address In 1896 Reverend Elisha Pease organized what would becomeknown as "The Missionary Society" with assistance from Mr Simeon Stevens who lived next door to him on Olive Street There are several references to this organization throughout history including an article written about them entitled "Missionaries From These Parts: Some Account Of An Adventurous trip To Kansas And Missouri" published July 1897 under the title "Pastor's Viewpoint: A Pioneer Group Moves Into Missouri" This group included such noted pioneers as Andrew Johnson Best who served as pastor at Springdale Presbyterian Church east of SaintLouis City prior to becoming President Ulysses S Grant's Secretary Of State When Missionary Society disbanded following Pease's death some members took up residence among their belongings at Stevens home until 1903 when they moved into their own church building located south of town . By 1907 there were only six residents living in Excello Springs but within ten years* increasing population thrust new businesses etc.: blacksmith shop opened 1909; ice cream parlor 1912; clothing store 1913; automobile dealership 1914; country club 1916-. A number of businesses have been located within or adjacent to downtown Excelsor Springs over the years such as: Kindey's Restaurant & Lounge (now closed), Maxwell's Place grocery store which closed down in 2001 but reopened under new ownership later that year, American Legion Post #334 now known as American Legion Hall which opened its doors on November 15th 1960 The city annexed much of southeastern St Francois County during 2001 - 2003 with plans to redevelop all or most portions of what had once been rural farms into dense urban neighborhoods with shopping malls and other commercial developments before relocating all or most citizens back to their rural homes by 2006 when voters approved annexation again without any Ofcicency Name changes

Excelsior Springs was first settled in 1835 by Baptist missionaries. The community’s name is derived from the Spanish word Excelsior, meaning “the highest point.” The original cabin and mill were built on the hill overlooking the town.
