Excelsior Springs is located in the Ozarks of Missouri, and has been inhabited by humans for at least 10,000 years. The first knife made in Excelsior Springs was a simple stone tool known as an adze. One of the first residents to live in Excelsior Springs was John Baptiste Comanche, who arrived in 1819. In 1835, Isaac Brock founded a trading post here named Brock’s Fort on the east bank of the Ottawa River. This post served as a center for trade with other Indian tribes and also functioned as a stronghold against Native American attacks. By 1850, there were more than 100 people living in Excelsior Springs. In 1873, pioneer Wm. Hamer purchased land here from the Sac and Fox tribe and established what would become Hamer’s Ranch. Here he built a log cabin which remains standing today. In 1885, David Sibley opened his grocery store at 5th Street and Washington Avenue in Excelsior Springs. This store became one of the most popular businesses in town and helped fuel growth within the community. Over time, many other businesses have been established within Excelsior Springs including restaurants, clothing stores, banks/retailers, health care facilities and more! Today, Excelsior Springs is home to an active cultural community that continues to thrive due to its unique history and culture! The original power plant consisted of 3 boilers and generated 2 horsepower each. In 1924 the first hydroelectric power station was built and produced up to 20 hp from three turbines Today there are two electric companies serving Excelsior Springs: Schneider Electric and FirstEnergy Solutions Corporation. Schneider Electric provides services for about 2,000 customers with a total electric bill of $2 million in 2017. FirstEnergy Solutions Corporation provides services for about 350 customers with a total electric bill of $1 million in 2017 The average residential customer bills are around $100/year while commercial customers have much higher rates as their needs grow larger such as businesses that need more than one outlet or services like high speed internet or phone service that require multiple outlets (like home office). Excelsior Springs, Missouri is a small town in Carbon County, Missouri, United States. The population was 1,878 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Kansas City metropolitan area. Excelsior Springs was founded in 1856 as a stage stop on the Underground Railroad. The first settler in Excelsior Springs was Fenton Bondurant. In 1868, John Smedley and his family moved to Excelsior Springs from Illinois. They started a gristmill that still stands today and are currently one of the few remaining businesses in town. In 1875, George Aitken bought land and built a house which he named "Eagle Heights". He also started an agricultural store which remains open to this day. The Aitkens were prominent figures in early Excelsior Springs and contributed much to its growth and development over the years. In 1907, Harry Wimer purchased interests in Excelsior Springs from The Second National Bank of Lebanon for $1 million dollars. He operated Wimer's Department Store until it closed its doors in 1975. Wimer later donated many items from his store to various local charities including: First Baptist Church (now known as Emmanuel Episcopal Church), The Children's Museum of Kansas City (now defunct), and the Kress Foundation for Community Service (now known as the Kress Foundation for Nonprofits). In 1925, Mrsgrace Haggerty established her own grocery business called "Haggerty's Mercantile Company" which continued operation into the 21st century until closing down due to economic reasons in 2009; however portions of their inventory remain available online through Amazon Prime Day 2019! Haggerty also founded "MrsGrace Haggerty's Schoolhouse Restaurant" which continues operation into 2019 inside MrsGrace Haggerty Elementary School! MrsGrace Haggerty dedicated her life to education throughout her career serving as both Headmistress at MsgrAnce High School from 1966-1974 before becoming Superintendent of Schools for Carbon County from 1974-2009; she is also currently active with myriad non-profit organizations!
The Excelsior Springs area was first settled in the mid-19th century by Missourians. As the population of the area grew, so did the need for a school and post office. The first school opened in 1872 and became known as Excelsior Academy. In 1922, the name change to Excelsior Springs High School after a gift from Mrs. Emma Hapgood. The current high school was built in 1963 and is named for Mrs. Emma Hapgood's son, Dr. Edwin Leland Hapgood II who served as superintendent from 1999 until his death in 2006.
