Excelsior Springs was founded in 1859 by settlers from Pennsylvania. In 1865, it became a county seat and remained so until 1907 when it reverted to its original name of Independence. The county seat moved to Florissant in 1907 and then to St Francois in 1927. The first post office was established at Excelsior Springs on April 6, 1859, by Alexander Hays with the name "Haysville". A second post office called "Independence" was established on October 10, 1865, by commissioners John Pugh and Wm Bickerton; both offices were closed due to lack of business. The third post office called "Excelsior Springs" was established on December 5, 1907 by Jno Fenton with the name "Excelsior Springs". In 1917 an oil well was drilled in what is now known as Excellular Park and production began soon afterwards. This led to new development around the park including two homes for officers of the U S Post Office built in 1924 and 1926 respectively (the first African American home in Missouri). After World War II ended there continued growth with construction of roads and housing developments throughout what is now known as downtown Excelsior Spring

The community was founded in 1872 by John Hargrave and his family, who were pioneers in what would become Randolph County. They named their new town after Excelsior Creek which ran through their farmstead. The name stuck and today’s name reflects that: “Excelsior Springs means ‘the source of many waters’ due to its proximity to several large springs.” In 1907, the community had a post office and it continued to serve until 1958 when it became a Village. In 1970, Excelsior Springs joined the city of Springfield as an annexe and has been growing ever since. Today, Excelsior Springs boasts a variety of businesses and services including a movie theater (The AMC), three grocery stores (Grocery outlet store & general store; First National Bank; Eveready), four churches (Church of Christ; Methodist Tabernacle; Presbyterian Church; Catholic Church), two restaurants (Cafeteria @ Olive Garden & Java Junction), two health clubs (National Health Care System & Wellness Center) and four Bars/Luxury Resorts- Excalibur Casino Resort(Excelsiropspring Casino Resort). There are many events that take place throughout the year in this small town such as farmer's markets on Saturday mornings or Wednesdays from 8am-1pm or 3pm-6pm or during major events like Harvestfest on October 9th each year where local artists sell their paintings outdoors from 12pm to 4pm
