Excelsior Springs is a small town that is known for its churches and businesses. The largest city in the area, Jefferson City, MO, is about 30 miles away. Excelsior Springs has a humid continental climate with hot summers and cold winters. Average temperatures range from 18-25 degrees Celsius during summer months and 1-3 degrees Celsius in winter months. There are no significant rainfall events throughout the year which makes irrigation important for agriculture purposes; however, recent rains have brought some improvement to roads and schools infrastructure. In addition to its growing economy, Excelsior Springs also enjoys a vibrant cultural life which includes several theaters, music venues, galleries and restaurants. In 2009/2010 it ranked as one of America's Best Towns for Families according to Newsweek Magazine Excelsior Springs began as a settlement on the present site of the town on July 8th 1855 by three men named Denton Poston, John Burtis and Wm Henson along with fifteen other pioneers under contract from J.P Harper & Co., furriers at St Joseph River Station (now Hannibal). On July 9th they made an election to establish their government through letters given out by Captain James Buchanan of Fayetteville Missouri Territory services provided by Major Luther Rice of Company K Fourth Infantry Missouri Volunteers who exerted himself very zealously in behalf of the new Government but without result leaving them much more than three weeks after inauguration having expended all their materials etc… They then proceeded on foot or wagons through heavy woods Sunday night January 6th following arrived at this place late Wednesday evening being now about forty five days since they set out from Fayetteville not having been able to obtain any wagon stock until lately because there was no road builded between hereabouts and Carthage so that when they did get into possession of some wagons they had almost immediately to leave them again because there was no money available for repairing them After taking possession of what horses they could find among those left behind by Capt Buchanan he formed his company into squads each numbering ten men each led by Capt Denton Poston captaincy being granted him also…. The first post office in town was established on October 1st 1857 by Wm Henson with six stamps issued bearing his name In 1865 local pioneer William Roemer erected a small log cabin near where Union Pacific Railroad tracks cross Main Street On November 12th 1865 local pioneer Ebenezer Griggs donated land bordering Summit Lake east of present day Elm Street for $10 per acre This donation forms part of Newton Township #6 north boundary today A store built on this donated land became known as "Griggs' Corner" before it changed hands many times before it became finally occupied by Harry Prentice who operated it from 1951 until his death in 1984 It currently stands vacant . . . . .On December 11th 1865 local pioneer Elijah Woods donated land adjoining Summit Lake west of present day Elm Street for $10 per acre This donation forms part Of Newton Township #6 south boundary today A store built on this donated land became known as "Woods' Corner" before it changed hands many times before it became finally occupied by Vernon McGee who operated it from 1951 until his death in 1984 It currently stands vacant The first school opened up at what is now called Phelps School House on October 1st 1857 taught grades one through eight By Rev Mgr Laughlin O’Brien Priest The second school opened up at what is now called Phelps School House on November 12th 1865 taught grades nine through twelve By Rev Mgr Laughlin O’Brien Priest Atwood Elementary School burned down August 15th 1902 rebuilt using lumber salvaged from other buildings Nearby First Congregational Church served congregation during early years while Second Congregational Church services were held at Home Grove Methodist Episcopal Zion Church For many years both First Congregational Church & Second Congregational Church were used as Holy Spirit Ministries meetings Which last meeting took place September 10TH 2003 inside First Congregational Church after long search One hundred fifty plus people attended Meetings including Ministers , Ministers’ families , children “Huckleberry Finn” author Mark Twain And His Wife “Cissy” Mrs Tom Sawyer owner Will Rogers attended Meeting Father Flannery entertained us With stories About [His] boyhood days As did numerous members Of His Family Most Reverend Dr Hugh Jansen officiated At Service Let us say A Happy New Year To All Who Are Involved We cordially invite everyone To attend Our next meeting Sept 10TH2003 Thank You

Excelsior Springs is a small town in the far west side of Missouri, United States. The population was 1,873 at the 2010 census. It is part of the St. Louis metropolitan area. The name Excelsior Springs comes from two springs - one named Excelsior and another which flowed beneath what is now Fourth Street and had the same name but different colors - red and white. The first Europeans to visit this area were Dutch settlers in 1672. They called it "Wabash", after a stream that ran through their colony on the lower Missouri River. On July 4, 1776, General George Washington led an army against Quebec's forces at Yorktown in Virginia, becoming President of the United States when he was discharged from his military command on September 3, 1777. American colonists in southwestern Missouri began to arrive during this time, including some who had been born or raised in Holland. A post office was established at Excelsior Springs on March 7, 1836; it remained operative until it was discontinued by order of Governor Neely on December 15, 1912. The first settler here was Ebenezer Crouch Jr., who arrived November 10th 1836 with his family from Warrensburg Illinois Territory (now WestWarren Township). He erected an early cabin near present day Third Street and Elk Road. One hundred years later James Hickey built a log cabin just south of Third Street commemorating his pioneer ancestor John Hickey who also settled hereabouts about 1800-1810 AFS In 1865 three brothers - David W Johnstone Moseley & Solomon D Mahlon Smith - came across Kansas soil & homesteaded north of US 69 about 8 miles northeast of Microsoft Site where they later founded Excelsior Springs water works company (& still operate) In 1870 US 50 Reptored over Big Creek Bridge so named for big black dragon fishing excursion we took each year before school let out
Excelsior Springs was founded in 1836 by John and Nancy Powers. The town grew rapidly due to the Cornish gold rush that began in 1849. In 1865, Excelsior Springs became a city. In 1902, the city annexed the neighboring town of Overland Park.
