Excelsior Springs was founded on May 1, 1854 by Captain James Comstock and his wife Anna Purdy Comstock. The original name for Excelsior Springs was Springdale but it was changed to Excelsior Springs because of its elevation above other towns in the county. In 1857, a post office called Excelsior Springs was established and remained in operation until January 15, 1870. The first land that was developed in Excelsior Springs were two lots purchased from James Humes by J Fenton on October 17, 1856. This lot included what is now known as Main Street and also included 2 acres (0 hectare) of what is now downtown Excelsior Springs. On November 3, 1892 voters approved a citizens' assembly to provide for annexation of neighboring townships into this city limits which resulted in the present day downtown area becoming parts of Excelsirofts core community while most residential areas including Main Street became part of nearby Park Heights or Lenox Township

The original town site was located on the east bank of the Missouri River between present day Excelsior Springs and Linnville. In addition to its location as the county seat, Excelsior Springs also served as a transportation point for goods and passengers traveling along the river during the early days of railroad development in this area. The first school in Excelsior Springs was built in 1859 by John G. Mapes and his brother-in-law, George Stephenson. The school was operated under private auspices until 1861 when it became part of a public school district established by Act of Congress known as “The Normal School District No. 1” This district served both local students and students from adjacent counties until it merged with other districts in 1870 to form The State Normal School District No. 7 which still serves Excelsior Springs today as one of its component schools (along with Forest Park). In 1865, General Ulysses S Grant visited Excelsior Springs while he was campaigning for President on behalf of Abraham Lincoln. After his visit, Grant donated land to be used for a military hospital near present day Jefferson City Mo., which later became St Joseph’s Hospital (now called Kansas Health & Science University). In addition to its role as a medical center during these years, St Joseph’s Hospital also played an important role in shaping modern day Excelsior Springs into what it is today; providing social services to many residents who would not have access to such services elsewhere at that time! On July 8th, 1898 – just weeks after McKinley had been elected President – General James Averill Grant came to town with his forces during their annual summer encampment at Fort Riley belowpresent day Topeka Kansas for maneuvers about two miles northwest of town on US Highway 160/Missouri Route 64 (now Interstate 70) . Onlookers were able to see much activity but no sign of any fighting because there were no troops available from then on until World War I began four months later! On October 11th following an initial attempt by two snipers employed by Gold Rush roughnecks operating out of Topeka Jail several miles southwest OF town - they succeeded in taking three men prisoner before being killed !! gold rush excitement led some robbers into town early one morning while most people were asleep !! events leading up to this event are well documented however those responsible remain at large today
The city of Excelsior Springs was founded in 1857 by the merger of two small settlements, Excelsior and Springdale. The original name for the new town was "Farmington." It changed to "Excelsior Springs" in 1868 when it became a part of the Kansas Territory. The first post office was established in Excelsior Springs in 1871. In 1902, the City Council voted to change its name to "Excelsior Springs, Missouri". The current name is derived from the prominent spring that resides within the city limits.
