In 1847, however, another military officer named Amos Darlington came up with a different type of gunsight called the “Darlingtonian Scope” which featured four lenses instead of just three! The community became a city in 1951 when it merged with nearby Florissant. It had a population of 7,853 at the 2006 census. In 2007, Excelsior Springs annexed the neighboring town of Florissant South to form a new city with its own mayor and council.

The name of the village was created by combining the words "Excelsior" and "Springs". The first permanent settler in Excelsior Springs was Gideon Youngblood, who arrived in 1836. He built a log cabin on the banks of the River Ozark. In 1838, he married Polly Greenough and moved to what is now known as the Old Settlement area northeast of Excelsior Springs. Youngblood served as justice of the peace for Phelps County from 1839 to 1840, and again from 1841 to1848. In 1848, John Pugh settled in Excelsior Springs with his family and began cattle ranching. Pugh served as sheriff of Phelps County from 1850 to 1863 and then as clerk of probate for Phelps County from 1865 until his death in 1865. In 1870, General Ulysses S. Grant visited Phelps County during his presidential campaign and attended a horse show at Springfield Armory where he bought two white horses which he later rode into history when he won that year's election over Zachary Taylor
