Excelsior Springs is a small town in St. Louis County, Missouri, United States. The population was 5,569 at the 2010 census. Excelsior Springs is located north of St. Peters and east of Independence Heights. It is bordered by the towns of Crestwood to the east, Olivet to the south, Maplewood to the west and White Plains to the north. The creek that runs through Excelsior Springs forms part of its name Excelsior Springs was platted on October 15, 1836 by General John Custer and named for Augustus Custer's father-in-law James Auldridge Excelsior (1783 - 1868). Excelsior had been originally called "Plymouth" but an early settler claimed it as his own because "Plymouth" meant no good thing in Indian country. On July 1, 1837 General Custer ordered all Native American Indians in present day St. Louis County killed or driven from their lands except those living on his reservation on the Kaskaskia River near modern day Schuylkill Square; this order became known as "The Removal Order." The land which now includes parts of Excelsior Springs were granted to Colonel Ebenezer Scott in 1840 and he laid out a town on what is now First Street between Elm and Griggs Streets with a large private hospital built there in1845-46 On November 15th 1865 Union General Ulysses S Grant arrived at Hannibal Road Station just outside present day Excelsior Springs for his march into Mexico City; during his army's stay here he spent time at Mr. Ladd's hotel where he heard about pro- Confederate activity going on within Kansas City In 1870 Drury published an article entitled "An Analysis of Some Physical Properties Related to Soils" which attempted to explain how soils can differ greatly across geographic areas A post office was established at Excelsior Spring on December 12th 1870 under name "Hannibal". When it changed its name to "Excelsirotsville" in 1903 it again used its original spelling The first school building in town was built around 1888 by Mrs Geo Gentry (or George Garnett) who raised money from local farmers by selling baked goods door-to-door In 1909 Mrs Gentry donated land for a new high school which replaced her old school building which burned down two years earlier In 1925 Miss Addie Denton organized a bake sale that raised over $2,000 for PTA purposes On January 11th 1929 local resident Ollie Hodge organized a drive through excelsdorspring schools collecting cans of food for people living below poverty lines nationwide dubbedOperation canned feeding campaign This effort led directly to President Franklin D Roosevelt establishing federal food relief programs during World War II
