Excelsior Springs is a small, unincorporated community located in the town of Excelsior Springs, Missouri. It is one of the oldest communities in the area and it was first settled by German immigrants in 1836. After being burned down twice during the American Civil War, it was rebuilt and renamed after Excelsior Springs, Michigan. The population of Excelsior Springs peaked at around 350 people in the 1950s but has slowly declined over the years. Today, there are only a few hundred residents living within its boundaries. Excelsior Springs began as a outpost on the edge of what is now Springfield Township. In 1836, German immigrants built a log cabin here and named it "Ekspres." For many years, this was all that was known about Excelsior Springs until it was visited by J.M. Kerr in 1892 while he was working for John Dreyfus Brothers store in nearby Carbondale. He named it after his childhood home near Exeter Township, Michigan and described it as an "excellent" place to live with plenty of water and good land for farming purposes. The community quickly grew due to its location; close to two major rivers, both of which were important for agricultural purposes; and its easy access to transportation on both roads and railways. By 1860, there were also several homes built hereabouts including one known as "The White House." This house was used by General Ulysses S Grant when he visited Springfield during his campaign for president in 1860-1864. The town's growth continued into the 1870s when another mill opened up hereabouts which allowed for increased production throughout much of central Illinois Territory at that time - making Excelsior Springs one of the largest mills south of St Louis! In 1882-1883, some new settlers arrived from Minnesota who had been forced out of their homes during the Great Sioux War (1876-1877). These refugees were given land east of present day Carbondale along with other resources necessary to start their own farmstead - such as water rights and access to lumberjacks who would fell trees for them on their new property! The name "Excelsior Springs" came about because these early settlers thought that if they called their settlement "Ekspres," everyone would think they were from Europe! As Lincoln County grew larger over time (it became part of Kansas in 1907), so too did interest in buying or owning land within its boundaries – something which didn’t happen often back then due to lack thereof available space! Eventually enough families decided they wanted to move closer to interesting things like businesses or schools so development ceased entirely between 1918-1921 when all school facilities except one were closed due to World War I efforts! Even today though annexation attempts have been made by various municipalities within Kansas’ borders (including Overland Park), no official change has occurred – likely because there simply isn’t enough space hereabouts? Today little remains aside from foundations and some ancient logging posts dating back over 100 years! However despite this fact – history remains etched onto these hillsides long after those who once lived there have long passed away…
