Excelsior Springs experienced significant growth during World War II as munitions production increased across Kansas City due to American involvement in that conflict. A large munitions plant was built here during those years; however, by 1950 it had largely been abandoned and its equipment removed or sold off. Afterward, many businesses changed hands here as developers came to make money from redevelopment projects around town – most notably Sears Roebuck & Co.'s original headquarters complex which still stands today (albeit with some updated features).
